Just spotted this is starting tonight and I thought on no, not another one, but realised I was thinking of the recent tv version of War of the Worlds (which was terrible).

But have quite enjoyed some of Sky 1 sci fi productions so an keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes I'd spotted this too. It looks as though the whole series is available for binge watching. I'll probably watch it in real time, if not a bit behind.

Hope it does the concept justice.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 02/10/2020 22:03

It reminds me of Westworld and just as complicated, I will carry on with it though, I will maybe watch episode 2 tomorrow.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/10/2020 22:11

I watched 5 episodes today and loved it. Never read the book but my ex did (and wouldn't shut up about it) and it doesn't sound the same as he described it.
I found it very moving.

justpoppy · 02/10/2020 22:45

We just watched the first episode. Have a copy of the book but if I have read it, it was a long time ago. I found it very confusing but also compelling. Don’t think I could binge watch it though. Will watch some more tomorrow.

stumbledin · 03/10/2020 14:48

If I hadn't happen to see a tabloid headline about this, I might have been a bit "shocked".

My memory of the book was that the Brave New World was a bit grim, not some hedonistic, Club med drug fueled state organisted orgy!

Is the writer trying to make some sort of contemporary comment about what young people are told (if media and advertising are to be believed) that every night is party night.

But apart from what seemed to be endlessly gratuitous nudity and happy to try and follow this story and forget about the book. Seems my title to this thread as a reinterpretation was right.

Also good to see C5 is continuing to make drama, even if I dont watch all of it. Quite a contrast to their usual output!

The world in the original novel was a hedonistic one where people were encouraged to have orgies etc so sounds fairly true to the book. (Haven't managed to watch the first episode as yet.)

Mutunus · 03/10/2020 21:23

The hedonism was a way of controlling the masses if I remember correctly. Can't say it sounds like "my" sci fi so I'll probably give it a miss unless I'm desperate.

Has anyone watched Away on Netflix? It's about the first manned Mars flight and how the crew cope with each other as well as the problems with undertaking such a demanding and difficult feat.

Oblomov20 · 04/10/2020 15:00

Watching. Episode 4 or 5 I think. Enjoying it. Dh, like a pp, said it was like Westworld.

stumbledin · 04/10/2020 19:06

Thanks for the correction about the book - I must have misremembered but then it is quite a few decades since I read it. Wonder what I was thinking of? Fahrenheit 451?

But will be watching episode 2 next friday with less puzzlement!

Just starting episode 5 now and am really getting into it, I reckon I will finish it tomorrow, I found the first episode a bit hard going and confusing but then it did seem to get much better and quite easy to follow

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 04/10/2020 19:22

Kindle book was only 77p so I just bought it and will read it afterwards

Ballstothis148 · 05/10/2020 15:36

Ok so watched it last night and just got so bored of the classic sci-fi approach of showing tits a hundred times over. So bored of seeing tits (they don’t show the men naked like this)... got absolute tit fatigue with tv shows. If you can convey sensuality and sexual tension without tits (and tits only), try again.

Weirdly not a prude (the opposite) but so bored of this bloke approach to telly

Mutunus · 06/10/2020 17:00

I'm getting a vague impression you may have an opinion of tits on TV Ballstothis148 Smile

rosegoldwatcher · 07/10/2020 19:28

Has anyone else finished the series?

I want to know - what was in the gold box?
- do you think that there will be a second series?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 07/10/2020 20:32

I got a bit lost at the gold box and need to be careful with spoilers but it does look like there could be a second series.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 07/10/2020 23:37

I'm so glad that the gold box was meant to be a mystery, i thought I missed something major.

BoudiccasBoudoir · 08/10/2020 18:56

I don't think there will be a second series. I think the box was meant to left you with questions and the idea that anything could happen.

I thought it was generally a good series, although I have not read the book

mum2jakie · 08/10/2020 21:09

Finally watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. Don't think the savage land storylines had much in common with the original novel though.

stumbledin · 10/10/2020 17:52

Okay have now watched the 2nd episode, and having cleared my mind of my misconceptions quite enjoyed it. Have no idea if it is anything like the book!

And seems to be settling into one of those series about a struggle between the haves and the have nots. More futurists than SF?

Also only just realisted that Demi Moore is in it. Not saying she shouldn't be, but interesting character for her to play from what I remember of her film roles.

But shows how slow I am, have only just realised that Lady Sybil from Downton is also in it! Grin

BoudiccasBoudoir · 10/10/2020 22:15

@stumbledin

I've watched every episode and missed entirely that it was Demi Moore and lady Sybil!

BoudiccasBoudoir · 10/10/2020 22:16

I didn't realise she was lady Sybil in harlots either, although recognised the actress as the same in harlots and Brave New world

stumbledin · 17/10/2020 16:01

Disappointed in last night's episode which was more like some cliched horror lost in the back woods.

Sad about Demi Moore.

Hopefully the outsider confronts the future strand will not also rely on cliched.

Think I still dont understand the structures, hierarchies in New London.

OP posts:
stumbledin · 28/11/2020 16:42

Well I've got the last episode last night and am ashamed to say didn't really understand what was meant to have happened. Or rather what the future was.

Apart from all the endless nudity which seemed less and less necessary, I had been quite enjoying it.

but the last episode made me realised I must have missed signifigant pointers in earlier episodes.

Any one else get to the end and can let me know - or if there is as easy to understand synopsis!
