Does anyone know how old Sheridan Smith's character is in this?

Also, didn't London look fab at night? 🙂♥️

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/09/2020 17:35

Fab enjoyed

Her fiancé said they had a wobble and wanted to forgive her

But she obv decided if she had an affair it wasn’t meant to be with him

Hence 2yrs later at the station she was with another man who obv took her abs daughter on

Coleman as always was fab. She forgive him

He got a new job in London

House by sea was lovely

rosegoldwatcher · 23/09/2020 19:10

@Horsemad - think she announced herself as 35(?) in episode 2.

Horsemad · 23/09/2020 19:42

Thanks @rosegoldwatcher. 🙂

I watched this although I had a vague memory of it, as so little else to watch.

In some ways it was very cliched (would have loved to have had Olivia Coleman meeting up with some random stranger).

I remember finding it a bit cringy first time round but this time round I was more struck by their being a sort of "message". ie have a fling, learn about yourself and become a "better" person and just assume those hurt will just get over it.

ie the male character became a better dad (and attentive husband) and found a job where he wasn't a doormat

and female character, who quite honestly this time round seemed to be in some sort of abusive relationship, verging on coercive control, gets the baby she always wanted but dumps the over the top zealot who is the father for what seemed to be a more conventional "homely" male.

So that's alright then.

(I hope once the daughter had grown up / gone to college the Olivia Coleman characters says, right I've done my being married mother role, now I'm off to see the world, enjoy myself!)

Finished it last night. Thought the 'happy ever after' ending was ridiculous. And wifey took him back. Because of course she did.

TwixTwixtwoo · 24/09/2020 13:01

I hadn't seen it before and was so disappointed with the outcome, Maggie should have booted him. No idea what either of the women were meant to see in him tbh, Sally was obviously suffocated by Ryan and Carl was just her escape route but I have no idea why Maggie would have taken him back. Utterly cliched and unsatisfying imo.
@Horsemad - think she announced herself as 35(?) in episode 2.
I think the age difference was supposed to be less than the difference in the actors' ages. Sally said she was surpised that Carl had a 17 year old son - even though David Morrissey was 49 when it was filmed - but I think he says that they got married soon after leaving uni, meaning that he was only supposed to be early 40s. And Sheridan Smith was supposed to be a few years older than her actual age of 32.

Problem is, both actors looked their ages - if anything Sheridan Smith looked younger - so I couldn't get away from the massive age difference, which was never even mentioned (presumably we were not supposed to notice it existed). It's typical of what happens on the screen - women are aged up and men are aged down. That's why we have someone like Jennifer Lawrence consistently playing characters way older than herself.

alfrew · 24/09/2020 15:48

Carl looked far too pleased with himself at the end.

Maggie was probably posting in 'Relationships' still distraught with self esteem in tatters.

Well, I guess why wouldn't he look pleased?

Only 2 years ago he was bored shitless with his middle aged life and middle aged wife, but he got to have an affair with a hot young woman and though the wifey protested, she of course took him back and now they're all happier than ever!

Well, he is at least.

midsomermurderess · 24/09/2020 17:36

2 people embark on emotional affair. I didn't like it. Gave up after episode 1. And the writer, to my mind very overrated.

icelollycraving · 25/09/2020 11:16

I find Sheridan Smith a bit hammy too.
My favourite bit was when he said I’ve had four protein bars and now I’m shaking Grin
I was confused over him just accepting the child wasn’t his, I guess it was easier to accept her word and not rock the boat too much.
Would have loved a slightly different ending but it was probably fairly realistic tbh. Lots of people assume they’d never forgive an affair but many do.
David Morrissey is sexy though. I would.

purpleme12 · 27/09/2020 21:45

I'm not quite sure how I feel about it when I got to the end!

Inkanta · 01/10/2020 19:44

Just found this today and watched it all. Wow, mesmerising and well acted by all. Didn't want the story to stop - hoped there was more to come, but that's it - just 2 episodes.

middleager · 01/10/2020 19:50

I didn't like it. I couldn't see why he was such a 'catch' and the pairing of the two main 'cheaters' didn't work for me.
I found it thoroughly depressing.

I preferred 'Us' (I know many don't).
