Has anyone else watched it?
It's perhaps 30 minutes too long, but really worth watching.
It's made me rethink my use of Social media (says the woman on Social Media)

Yes I saw this last night. All I’m not doing on my social media and the internet is reading more about it and trying to share the word on my fb. I’ve also been leaving all fb groups and turning off all notifications. I feel sick tbh. I knew it was bad and manipulative but I didn’t fully understand the magnitude of the problem.

Everyone needs to see this film!

whats it about? I need to watch this although I don't have FB, but my teenagers do. 🌺

MaMaLa321 · 15/09/2020 10:55

about the insidious effect that Social Media has, not just on adolescents (which is bad enough) and us, but our politics.
It's not just FB either.
When I look at MN on my phone, every time I get a picture of a black man and a white woman together, saying 'this is Michael Jordan's wife'. Why is this? Some algorithm is throwing it up.
It is slow in pasts, but it is really important to watch it all.

@MaMaLa321 I have deactivated facebook and instagram. never used twitter. DH has deleted facebook months ago and says he is a lot happier and doesn't miss it.

I keep facebook messenger app to talk to older relatives.

As the documentary says, if you are not paying for a service, then you are the product as nothing is for free. I think facebook/instagram is far worse than mumsnet because unless you have a shell account, many people have their kids photos there, they are connected to their relatives. It is far easier to manipulate someone if you know personal details than if you are XXbarbie1994.

my DH has been trying to get facebook to delete his personal data for months.

MaMaLa321 · 15/09/2020 12:15

After reading Jared Lanier's book on the subject, I stopped using google as a search engine (I use DuckDuckGo, which is committed to not sharing your data).
Like you, I keep FB messenger for talking to relatives.

I’d also like to read Jared’s book. I’d love to get lost in a conversation with him 😅

BlueThistles · 15/09/2020 16:38

I'll have a look at DuckDuckgo too .. thank you

SwanShaped · 16/09/2020 11:52

I’m gonna watch this too. Has anyone read the book ‘The Persusders?’

SwanShaped · 16/09/2020 11:53

Persuaders.

@MaMaLa321 I saw a trailer for this so its on my to watch list. I'm probably the only person on here thats not on FB or twitter etc. Its annoying how many buisnesses use FB and have no website. I wish I had a camera for peoples expression when I say I'm not on FB. I do feel left out at times when I've missed something and people say "it was on Facebook " however I think FB is toxic as I hear people arguing in shops about it.
