I want to like it. But I have so many issues with it.

Why is her husband allowed to work on the same mission? Conflict of interests surely?

Her husband has a life threatening illness yet he works ft for NASA and she decides to still go on the mission.

The Russian is the snake in the grass (cliche).

I hear you.

But am loving it anyway! I find it great escapism.

JulesCobb · 07/09/2020 22:21

Just on episode 1 atm. Seems ok.

JulesCobb · 07/09/2020 22:23

Although i read a review earlier that gave it one star because of all the video calls to earth, which were unbelievable.

Just done Ep2 which was better....still lots to pick at. I'm not normally so nitpicky with shows.

Im on ep 7... it’s no more believable now. Science Fact it most certainly isn’t!

But, take that with all a pinch of salt and I think it’s still enjoyable. Has its moments at least.

Lemonylemony · 08/09/2020 02:46

I’m bingeing it, cant sleep tonight. Currently on ep 6. Course it’s not science fact, it’s set in a world where we have a lunar base to refuel a mission to Mars, I think it’s reasonable to assume they’d have superior communications as well Grin!

But it’s not really about the sci-fi space stuff is it - it’s about the human relationships. It’s a little worthy, granted, but I think inclusive in a good way, I think presenting a world we’d like to live in. I’ve been in tears a few times, there’s some emotion there. Stick with it is my recommendation so far :-)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/09/2020 06:51

We will stay with it,

Def stick with it, just finished it this evening and I found it really compelling.

Boredsilly · 09/09/2020 14:21

I'm on episode 2 and really enjoying it so far found myself close to tears several times but then it doesn't take much to set me off!! Lol!! Don't know if I could leave my daughter like that for 3 years though the bit where she was crying on the phone to her mum really got to me

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/09/2020 15:34

Finished ep3 last night.

I'm sort if feeling like the fact it is a space mission to mars is almost irrelevant. They could just be on any journey/trip that takes 3 years. It's more the people. No real space drama.

I watched all the episodes - it's not the Martian - it's less sci-fi and more about people.
I do have my favourites (the gardener and the engineer) and I like the fact that they do not all speak English continually.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/09/2020 17:04

I love The Martian.

Yes I Really like that too.

I've watched it all and agree it's not serious Sci fi. Much of that side is not very believable. But the human stories draw you in. And I genuinely didn't know if they would get there or not. I was guessing until the very end.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 12/09/2020 23:35

I enjoyed it! It was light entertainment that I was able to binge watch.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 12/09/2020 23:37

my favourite was probably the russian engineer- I found his back story quite moving and felt the daughter was quite unforgiving. But, I guess you couldn't hugely blame her for feeling abandoned. Lived the puppet show with the space dog

bakingdemon · 21/09/2020 20:47

I'm enjoying it, but the thing that really keeps annoying me is that they all have backstories that their commander apparently didn't know. There's just no way that she wouldn't know a spouse died/a brother died young/parents died horribly - she'd have seen all the detailed crew files and they'd have spent hours together doing team building stuff and sharing these stories.

spiderbride · 23/09/2020 11:36

I love this show, but half the fun is hearing my DP's enraged commentary (long time space geek with a degree in physics). You definitely need to suspend disbelief with some of the social stuff as well; the crew are insubordinate from the start and her husband shouldn't be involved at all. But I enjoy it a lot. My favourite character is the Chinese woman. Her story brought me to tears.

Lemonylemony · 23/09/2020 12:13

The idea that they’d merrily send them off to Mars with a water system back-up that wasn’t up to scratch is the weirdest one for me. I enjoyed the whole thing so much though that I’ve watched it through twice now. Love the ending with the photo and the reaction of the Chinese official.

spiderbride · 24/09/2020 11:26

@Lemonylemony That got me too!! And the fact that none of the components can be replaced by others - that is extremely poor design for something intended for use on spacecraft!!
