So if anyone remembers the first season of Dirty John then I’m sure most of you will agree that it was a fabulous show! It’s coming back to Netflix on 14th August and this time it’s about Betty Broderick, she is the disgruntled ex wife of lawyer, Dan Broderick and his new wife, who was once his mistress whilst he was married to Betty, Linda Broderick.

Betty walked into Dan & Linda’s house back in 1989 and shot them both dead, check her out on You Tube! She is mental!

I cannot wait for this to start, been wanting something new to get my teeth into!

Inappropriatefemale · 27/07/2020 19:32

I cannot wait! I have watched the Betty Broderick movie and various crime shows about her on You Tube, what a character!!

Is anyone watching this?

I am ashamed to say that I binged it all in two sittings!

It is very different from Dirty John series 1 but equally compelling.

Betty's story is one that we see here every day on the Relationships board. But she had no support, on line or in real life.
Very, very sad.

thenightsky · 15/08/2020 19:47

I'm half way through episode 4 (she's just burnt his clothes). I wasn't sure it was going to be as good as S1, but I'm really getting into it now.

thenightsky · 15/08/2020 23:05

on E7 now. god this so sad Sad

rosegoldwatcher · 15/08/2020 23:12

Spoiler alert!

I did a bit of research; she is still in prison. She was denied parole in 2010, 2011 and 2017 because she refused to show remorse. She won't become eligible for parole again until 2032, by which time she will be 85.

Hippofrog · 16/08/2020 18:23

I really loved it. Fantastic

Mookie81 · 16/08/2020 22:28

Just started the episode where she's talking to the reporter.
I'll be honest, he deserved everything he got!

SapatSea · 17/08/2020 09:48

I binge watched as well. Thought the acting was great. I really felt for her children. Her husband was a piece of work, the whole of the patriarchal machine ranged against her.

rosegoldwatcher · 17/08/2020 10:02

She was let down by everyone she thought she could/should have been able to count on.

Her awful parents! Supposedly good Christians but, when she was clearly at her lowest ebb, they said they didn't want to be involved.

The 'friends' who testified against her at trial.

The male lawyer.

The judge at her divorce hearing...

mizu · 17/08/2020 10:06

Starting episode 4 later. It's quite hard to watch actually, I really feel for her. The actress who plays Betty is so good. Her slow growing resentment of her life, at the oh so common position of women then, at home with the kids doing everything. It's really interesting.

I binge-watched this over the weekend with my daughter who is 27. I was a few years younger than Betty, & grew up in Southern California. I explained to my daughter why I never fell into the “good wife” trap, but I was a follower of second wave feminism & on the periphery of the counter culture, so we were against marriage & the bourgeoisie generally. Kinda validates my position at the time. I did marry once, but we were equal partners & when I divorced, I had the law on my side. But poor Betty - she did make mistakes, but she had no support, & her ex was plain evil! A great show, thought-provoking.

rosegoldwatcher · 17/08/2020 15:55

@Moanranger - you must be watching Mrs America on BBC iplayer? If not, you should - it is right up your street!

Inkanta · 17/08/2020 21:16

Very good series. Glad to see the focus was on his narcissism and crazymaking: - his gaslighting, the affair, the discard, depriving her of her children - and the cruelty in court. Couldn't help but think - what took her so long.

rosegoldwatcher · 17/08/2020 21:57

@Inkanta - yes, he was gaslighting her for TWO YEARS!

I loved the final scenes - imagining a different outcome if only...
If only he had admitted to his affair when she asked him about it.
If only she had kept her head and her lawyer for the initial hearing.
If only she hadn't left her children at his door.

Moanranger · 17/08/2020 22:21

rosegold yes, enjoyed Mrs America, although I agreed with Gloria Steinem’s recent opinion piece that Eagle Forum (P Schlafly) less influential than corporate interests opposed to equality. Good drama, tho.

Xyzzzzz · 17/08/2020 23:11

Finished it. I really liked it, yes betty was frustrating but I understand why she was like that. I felt for her.

Swelteringmeltering · 17/08/2020 23:42

I've not finished it, episode 5.

Why didn't she fight back smarter sooner.
She was locked in dreamland for so long.
My own dm was a little like this. Incapable of taking any proactive action for an end goal just locked in revenge.

It's very sad. So far I think he's a dispicable Vile human.

Inkanta · 18/08/2020 05:56

Yes the gaslighting went on for so long. I was rooting for Betty to confront Linda to find out the truth but don't think she did. Betty seemed both angry and afraid, and obviously traumatised by Dan and his grinning, smug arrogant face - what a narc! Great acting.

Swelteringmeltering · 18/08/2020 15:55

Where is the movie!

rosegoldwatcher · 18/08/2020 17:46

'@Swelteringmeltering - the series that we are discussing is on Netflix (UK)

The film (with Meredith Baxter Birney) I have found on Youtube.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/08/2020 18:10

Just watching now

But i would recommend the book : Until the Twelfth of Never: The Deadly Divorce of Dan & Betty Broderick By Bella Stumbo

Inappropriatefemale · 24/08/2020 01:21

I knew that BB would get sympathy on MN simply because she is a woman! So predictable! If Dan has shot BB and her new hubby’s stone cold dead in bed then I bet you wouldn’t take Dans side like your taking BBS, the program makers made BB look like a sympathetic character on purpose, I suggest you watch Dateline about the case and the real reason she shot Dan is due to the fact the $16k alimony she got monthly, in 1989 may I add, wasn’t enough! She is a sociopath and still isn’t sorry and can’t even pretend to be to get out of jail to go and repair her relationships with her kids, and possibly grandkids now, her hatred of Dan is still there 31 years later, she is a fucking crazy greedy Bitch.

OP posts:
Inappropriatefemale · 24/08/2020 01:23

...whose hatred of Dan is more important to her than the love she feels for her kids! She is a narcissist and killed their dad who they absolutely adored.

OP posts:
Inappropriatefemale · 24/08/2020 01:27

Honestly women on here are so predictable..she dumped the kids at Dans door so he didn’t deprive her of them at all, that’s BS to make BB look good, fuck knows why though...and I don’t believe that Dan called her fat etc, she felt like this when he had an affair but I don’t think he said it to jet.

Amanda Peet was not the right actress for this role and too pretty and slim to play BB.
