This is a bit of a gem, it's like Oz's version of Undateables. I have found it so relatable - that stage in your life when you're ready for courting, but it's all such uncharted territory.

It’s absolutely wonderful. Michael is amazing. It also gives me so much hope for my daughter.

The couple with the lad who played pool were amazing, so tuned in to each other. That he hadn't had a diagnosis until adult was quite shocking.

I adored the redhead Andrew who did puzzles and k'nex, and was sad he didn't find anyone.

The Chinese lad Kelvin seemed a long way out of his depth, I did think his dad was lovely, all the parents were.

EggBoxes · 28/07/2020 19:09

Yes, the parents are very sympathetic too. I’m finding Olivia hard to warm to.

I watched it all at the weekend. It was much better than the Undateables. I was very moved by the wonderful and supportive families.

I really enjoyed this- some thoughts...

I didn't enjoy the segments about what the people enjoyed/disliked, it was really strange and everyone was perfectly able to articulate what they liked/didn't like anyway. Also, some of the music was a bit 'cutesy', that plinky music they put on, it's slightly patronising and makes you see people as vaguely funny, again, no need for that.

I did also wonder if you have two people with communication issues, I'm not sure a formal dinner is the way to go- I find these stressful at the best of times. I think it highlighted some of the difficulties more than otherwise would be the case and were used to show up this occasionally in a way that was not kind. The activities/nights out looked much more fun.

Maddi was an absolute gem of a person and I loved her 'vaguely horrified' look when the person veered into inappropriate conversation. She was very witty and clever and needs someone that can keep up with that (her parents were hilariously intrusive but absolutely lovely).

EggBoxes · 30/07/2020 10:43

Yes, I liked Maddie. She looks very similar to a good friend of mine, so I think I had some transference going on.

ill be honest i hate that kind of stuff its exploitative, their disabilities often play to social communication and are being filmed in social situations, for other people's entertainment.

EggBoxes · 30/07/2020 12:18

I think there’s a balance to be struck so that people with disabilities are seen and heard and yet not exploited.

OP posts:
MonsteraCheeseplant · 30/07/2020 12:23

Agree about a balance. We don't want to hide people away because they have different takes on life but of course we don't want to exploit people. I hope there is a good process of informed consent around this but there is no obligation for TV production companies to do this i don't think?

jay55 · 30/07/2020 19:09

They were all able to stop filming when it was too much or when they were bored of it.
I thought they worked well to be sympathetic and not like a zoo exhibit.

DrStrangesMagicDressingGown · 18/08/2020 20:53

I liked it. It made me reflect on my own son who has HF ASD, he's only 8 just now but seeing the variety of people there made me realise how although his language skills are very high functioning his social understanding isn't at all. Just a random thing I got from it.

doadeer · 28/09/2021 19:53

Hello! Anyone watching series 2??

jay55 · 28/09/2021 20:18

Watching.
Of the new people I love Teo's energy, it's good to show someone who presents so differently.

Really enjoying catching up with those from season one too.

doadeer · 28/09/2021 20:51

I find Teo so radiant, her face is beautiful. I like her a lot

jay55 · 01/10/2021 11:55

Spoilers below if anyone hasn't seen it all.

I totally cried during the wedding, they were so excited and happy. And the vows were amazing.

And may have had something in my eye during the dress fitting.

doadeer · 01/10/2021 20:26

I'm a mum of an autistic boy and Jimmy's vows had me 😭😭😭

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 25/11/2024 22:11

I know this is a zombie thread but I just rewatched this and the USA version too. I'm absolutely in love with them all.
