Has anyone watched The Plot Against America? Just brilliant

Its based on the book. Only six episodes about the Jews in America during the war and what could have happened if the wrong president was elected. Abit like today 😟. Winona Ryder is fantastic in it and she hasnt aged a day I swear. The cast is just brilliant.

I cant see another thread about it. Its on Sky Atlantic.

Yes, I seen this and yes it was good. The only criticism was the cousins story - he just ended up in places with zero explanation of where he was and how he got there - and it happened a lot.

The nephew?

So good. It’s amazing how slowly and subtly their freedom was eroded, made it seem entirely plausible.

I really fancied Alvin.

AgentCooper · 26/07/2020 20:18

And yes to Winona. She always did my nut in when she was younger but she’s grown into a fantastic actress. Ever since Stranger Things she’s been brilliant in everything I’ve seen her in.

I fancied Alvin and Herman! When they took Alvin away what did he do with the radio it was so quick, did he cause the presidents crash? Or something else?

@EachandEveryone Herman had grown on me too by the end! I think that’s what was implied- that Alvin’s radio equipment was in some way responsible for the crash. He certainly seemed to think so afterward but it was a bit mysterious, wasn’t it?

That poor wee boy Seldon, he broke my heart. It was all so cleverly done, in a few episodes to go from the Rabbi being a pillar of government to being detained. And then you have the KKK burning cars with people in them. You can absolutely see how those things could happen.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/07/2020 20:48

@EachandEveryone, yes the nephew I meant. I kept thinking, wait, what has just happened? How did he end up there?

EachandEveryone · 26/07/2020 21:22

What do you mean? The army?

I couldn't get into this at all, the first episode was really slow and stagey.

Does it get better??

MummaGiles · 27/07/2020 09:42

I couldn’t get past the first episode either. Too slow. DH has read, and loved, the book and ploughed through the tv series.

EachandEveryone · 27/07/2020 13:52

Did either of you watch the Wire? It’s the same two writers who have adapted this for tv so that might explain the slow pace of the first episode. It is worth persevering.

I loved it, so believable how their liberty was being eroded and they couldn’t quite believe it.
I have a major crush on Hermann

KrabbyPatties · 28/07/2020 16:21

I love it

Find the sets really gloomy though

KrabbyPatties · 30/07/2020 15:39

Is anybody still watching?

Hippofrog · 30/07/2020 16:24

Which channel?

EachandEveryone · 30/07/2020 19:07

I watched it in two goes 😔

Sky Atlantic

Just finished this. The first couple of episodes were a bit slow, but it gathered pace and the last episode was absolutely nail-biting! But.... how can they leave it like that? What happens next? Will there be another series - but how can there be because Philip Roth who wrote the book died in 2018 apparently. Or did the series not cover all the plot of the book? (Haven't read it). Does anybody know?

It was all quite scary and made you think how it could quite easily have happened, with so many in America wanting to be isolationist, then as now. Uncomfortable foreshadowing of things happening in the world now, actually.

Brilliant stuff. Winona Ryder was great, also the actress (Zoe Kazan is it?) who played Bess. Well all of them really, kids too.
