I know there’s a general thread about the show, but I wanted to ask a specific question.
I was a big EE fan for over 25 years. I stopped watching for a while in 2013 as it had gone really downhill, but the Lucy Beale murder drew me back in.
A couple of years ago now, I started to fall out of love with it again. There was a new producer who decided to go ‘down to earth’; hence an endless storyline about bin collections and Denise treating one GCSE like she was writing her doctorate. Then the BBC ditched him and his replacement ditched all his storylines overnight, and it all became about that Aidan JP Oirish gangster for months on end. The final straw was that hideous poppy-eyed thing with a grudge against Mick (the one whose brother was a boy of a village idiot and then came out as gay). Never have I found a soap character so unwatchable, and he was in it ALL the time, dominating every storyline. I was enduring, not enjoying - so I switched off. I think the last time I saw it Mel and Spandau Ballet’s son has just clobbered his stepdad and buried him in the woods.
In some ways I think ‘Well, it’s two hours a week to do something else’. But I also see things on Digital Spy and feel a bit sad that something I enjoyed for years is still going on, but I’m not watching anymore. Given that it’s currently off the air, I’m wondering if I should give it another chance when it returns? I’m thinking with there having been a break in transmission, there will need to be a ‘since we were last in Walford’ recap, so it could be a good time to pick it up.
EE fans - is it worth watching again? Is Pop-eye still in it? What’s the new family like?
