Its wonderful. I admit I'm interested in politics and history but there are compelling and nuanced performances and a sense of a different time when being a housewife with a male head of household wasn't seen as Stepford Wives.

Its interesting because until Phyllis Shleffley intervened equal rights for women was seen as pretty uncontroversial and promoted by the republicans. It illuminates the roots of the uncompromising ultra conservative right.

I'm really enjoying this and I didn't think I would. Hard to believe it was only in the 70s, when I was a teenager.

Place marking to remind me to watch!

AuntieMarys · 16/07/2020 06:58

Starting it today.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 16/07/2020 08:43

I am watching but finding it somewhat confusing.

okiedokieme · 16/07/2020 08:57

It is excellent, just can't believe women objected to equality!

BobFleming · 16/07/2020 09:05

I’m really enjoying it and the fabulous cast.

It’s really shocking that this was only in the 1970s.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/07/2020 09:09

I'm 4 episodes in and really enjoying it.

Marie543 · 16/07/2020 09:13

Thank you, love a good recommendation xx

The bit about doing 2 jobs and feeling shit about both was incredibly accurate for me. Cate Blanchett is impeccable, I'm almost on her side!

I agreed with that comment too although 4 episodes in and I'm definitely with the feminists! I've just spent an hour reading about all the real life women online and I'm fascinated.
NoToMisogyny · 17/07/2020 20:48

Interesting that then it was right wing women opposing women’s rights, and now it’s women on the left fighting to erase women’s sex-based rights! That struck me the whole time I was watching it

Yes, isn't that fascinating? My politics around equal rights are NOT at all aligned to hers, and the obvious rebuttal (to me) to that argument is that everyone should share all work fairly; but she was dead right about women ending up with two full-time jobs.

Also find it interesting that she majors on the fear of losing alimony; again, she and I would differ on what the solution should be, but she is right that women were/are too often left wanting financially in relationship break-ups.

There's already a thread about this and not that far down the index link!

I posted on this one as I wanted to reply to a specific point.

I've binge watched it all this weekend. Fantastic programme and although I didn't fully understand all the ins and outs of US politics it was easy enough to follow. Outstanding performances by all the women involved.
