A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them.

We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when. The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. Quite a few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/ML is too dense to realise the 2ML/2FL is better)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I've become hooked on Korean variety shows. Currently watching Dogs Are Incredible on YouTube and enjoying the segment on dogs that we miss. They had a stray pup that was cared for by some locals as they tried to rescue it and it was then adopted by a US serviceman. They managed to track the dog down and the people who cared for it and rescued it managed to see it again before the family were redeployed (they took the dog with them to Germany). Proper onion cutting. They also have segments on search and rescue/guide dogs and it's good to see them educating people about the etiquette when you see a working dog. Also watching 7.7 billion in love and Ordinary Family on Viki, which are interesting. Running Man is a family favourite and even DH gets into it.

I needed a Li Xian fix, so Tientsin Mystic is getting rewatched 😁 A friend asked for Netflix recommendations and I couldn't give her any English speaking ones 😂😂

boatyardblues · 24/06/2020 21:43

Space Force, Monkey. It’s very funny. But, yes, I struggle to recommend English language stuff.

Jae-Young almost redeemed himself in ep 13 by calling Yi Sang at the right moment.

I’m liking Eu Ddeum’s ongoing duck & parry to avoid office biyatch.

@AesopsMables - I like the look of those square pans but they are surprisingly expensive in the UK online shops. I suppose they are probably a sensible price if you are fortunate enough to find a decent sized RL shop that caters to that sector of the market. Sadly, my nearest shop a) doesn't stock much fancy cookware, & b) it's a fair trek away - if I'm going, I'm bringing black sticky rice, herbs & spices, condiments etc back. Not cookware! Having said that, I have bought a solid iron griddle thing, to use on the hob, because I really like the look of Japanese street food, especially onomiyaki.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 25/06/2020 01:42

You can use a small frying pan or crepe pan (my preferred choice) for making rolled eggs since the main thing is to make thin layers. I would but a square pan if I could get one because they tend to be the perfect size for fish, but they don't work well on an electric hob and I think DH would have a meltdown if I wanted to convert the hob to gas (which I will once the bugger breaks). Every other kitchen appliance has needed to be replaced in the last 5 years but that thing is still going strong (sobs)

boatyardblues · 25/06/2020 07:07

A square pan would help get the rolling started, but otherwise a standard pan works fine IME.

I may have to rewatch Gogh just for Kim Young Kwang’s legs

fifilacklustre · 25/06/2020 09:32

Aww, that's disappointing. I will wait, as I prefer binge watching. Okay, back to the drawing board to find something light and fluffy for this weekend.

bettys · 25/06/2020 09:44

fifi fear not!! all the episodes are up it is a mini-series, that's what boaty meant

bettys · 25/06/2020 09:47
