I feel cheated that the series ended up being so short! I hope they bring it back.
If only to see Mark’s face when the 26 ex-Hallmark hotels join the group, eclipsing his job centre hotel triumph. The sight of him sitting on that little commuter train to Luton writing things down in a file (shopping list? Favourite footballers?) and trying to look like a big time businessman was hilarious. Poor old Mark.
I was a bit dubious about the 26 new hotels though. The LGH group, from whom the hotels were acquired (and when I say acquired, I mean that those hotels’ admin and booking business was acquired, not the bricks and mortar hotels themselves) are one of the franchisees for the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza brands in the UK, and also operate the Hallmark brand. They don’t appear to own the hotels, they just operate them on behalf of the owners of the buildings, who might be private individuals, REITS or other investment vehicles.
Intercontinental Hotels own the brands and franchise them to LGH and others, and if a hotel is starting to look a bit tatty or outdated they will remove the franchise from the hotel owner. So the owner of the hotel needs to find another brand to associate itself with.
Which is a long way of saying, what Best Western appear to have ended up with is 26 of the crapper ex-Hallmark branded hotels that weren’t considered good enough for the Hallmark brand name. Is that something to boast about? At least that inspector guy will be kept busy.
