I can’t find a broadcast date, however.

I see the BBC is continuing its efforts to push drag into mainstream television with the casting.
Just like Sewing Bee.🙄

What do you mean ‘push drag’?

ElizabethMainwaring · 26/05/2020 09:43

I presume op is referring to Bagga Chips.
A rather odious character. Was on Drag Race.
I read about them on the FWR board.

PurpleDaisies · 26/05/2020 09:45
Hmm
ElizabethMainwaring · 26/05/2020 09:45

But I assume that you knew that already if your user name is anything to go by!

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 26/05/2020 09:50

Can’t wait! Baga Chipz is going to be on it this year. She’s fabulous.

ElizabethMainwaring · 26/05/2020 09:52

Judy, did you read the opening post?

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 26/05/2020 09:56

I did yes.

RuPaula · 26/05/2020 10:56

Yes, but why is that ‘pushing drag’? OP do you think contestants shouldn’t be allowed if they are drag queens? Are there any other criteria that you think shouldn’t be allowed?

ElizabethMainwaring · 26/05/2020 12:18

A lot of people equate drag to blacking up, 'womanface'.
Bags Chipz doesn't exactly celebrate womanhood does 'she'.
And there has been a lot of controversy re Drag Queen Story Time.
And the normalisation of a sexual fetish.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 26/05/2020 12:23

I would love to take my DD who’s 4 to a Drag Queen story time, but sadly my local area don’t do any.
Baga doesn’t need to “celebrate womanhood”, she’s a man in a dress...a performer.

RuPaula · 26/05/2020 14:48

I don’t think the BBC is trying to push drag, I think they’re probably trying to promote inclusivity. Or they’re just trying to find contestants/participants to fill all the spaces in all their reality TV shows......? I think people can read too much into everything. On celeb masterchef they usually try to get a mix of people, sports, reality, entertainment, musicians etc. Baga just fits into one or two of these categories so has been hired.

gingergran · 26/05/2020 16:01

I saw Baga on pointless and he was actually very funny and intelligent so let’s see

Starksforthewin · 26/05/2020 16:44

My view, as a feminist, and without wanting to derail the thread, is that drag is a fetish which demeans women, exaggerating supposed ‘female” characteristics and perpetuating some really awful tropes, such as all vaginas smell of fish!

There is a lot of intelligent discussion and debate on the feminism boards, so anyone interested should head over there.

The BBC has been upping its exposure of drag culture lately. Drag Race, Glow Up, Sewing Bee etc. I find it mildly troubling.
To me, it goes beyond equalities and inclusivity obligations which I very much support. Drag does not equal gay, for instance.
It’s a minor fetish being given much airtime.

I agree op. And, don't worry, you can't derail your own thread!

Starksforthewin · 26/05/2020 19:36

Thanks Elizabeth

I suddenly became aware that a thread for a light hearted cooking programme became pretty challenging. Some of the celebs look fun. I wonder if Judy Murray will be a better cook than she was a dancer?
