Cassandra would never have married Rodney...

I'm bored clearly, watching OFAH and am a massive fan. Anyone else agree that someone prim and proper like Cassandra would never have married our Rodders...

I also preferred him when he was dippy and loveable and feel his character changed too much after he met her. She turned him into a bit of a snob.

I agree, highly successful independent woman about town. She had her pick of the bunch. Rodders sweet as he was had more issues than Vogue, he probably wouldn't have got to a second drink with her.

NotKeenOnSwede · 24/05/2020 19:49

He was lovely. But as you say she was a highly successful bank manager, with a stuck up "Mummy" and wealthy "Daddy"

He was a pub drinking chainsmoker who lived in a high rise and had no real job.

It just wouldn't have happened.

He did go through episodes of trying to "better himself" though, didn't he? Normally his efforts were derailed by Del and his codependence with his brother.

Maybe Cassandra wanted to keep her job and life, and a relationship with a high-earning man would have probably meant sacrificing some of that.

Love OFAH! I think Cassandra’s parents knew Del from back in the day didn’t they? I think it’s mentioned her dad was brought up on a council estate.

slipperywhensparticus · 25/05/2020 15:41

Maybe she fancied a bit of rough

BeepBeepB · 25/05/2020 15:42

^^sorry - Cassandra’s dad knew Del, not her mum as well. I’m sure I read Cassandra’s OFAH mum is Benedict Cumberbatch’s real mum!

BoujiSnail · 25/05/2020 15:42

I think it was like Common People by Pulp!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/05/2020 15:42

Hated Cassandra she was too whiny and snippity.

CodenameVillanelle · 25/05/2020 15:43

Cassandra's dad was from Del and Rodney's side of the tracks. I think she fell for him as a bit of rough/a project/to piss off her parents.

emz771 · 25/05/2020 15:46

It does happen though doesn’t it!

BoujiSnail · 25/05/2020 15:47

And what was Raquel's back story? She seemed like she came from money too but was also a stripper?

Darlingyouvegottoletmeknow · 25/05/2020 15:48

Although when she had some bank friends round for drinks they were dull, and the man (her boss I think?) was a show-off yuppy. I think she said once that the men she met at the bank conference were boring. I think she thought Rodney was fun and sweet, and she quite liked the lengths he went to trying to impress her. Her Dad I think grew up working class and made some comments about liking jellied eels and Del's local pub, so maybe Rodney's family reminded her of her Dad in a good way.

However yes in reality if Cassandra had sought advice from Mumsnet or other friends, she would be advised to steer well clear due to his lying to impress her, and his being unable to deal with his brother ("you have a boyfriend problem, not a brother-in-law problem")

CodenameVillanelle · 25/05/2020 15:49

She was married to slater wasn't she - she escaped an abusive marriage and worked as a stripper and actress to support herself rather than go back to her parents. They fell out for some reason.

Standrewsschool · 25/05/2020 15:51

Cassandra was on my choice of names for a girl if I had a dd. Ended up having ds’s.

Pelleas · 25/05/2020 15:57

I think the idea was that she'd married him for his sense of humour - their early dates show them sharing a slightly offbeat idea of a joke. They met on a computing course so he'd have appeared as someone actively trying to better himself.

That was Raquel (Del's partner) not Cassandra.

Rodney always used to attract the posh girls, like that lord of the manors daughter, it must have been his art GCE Grin

CatsOfSummer · 25/05/2020 16:12

Raquel mentions at some point that when she told her dad she wanted to be an actress, he seemed to think it was equivalent to being a sex worker, so she left. She is back in touch with them when Damian is about 5, and her parents are in that 1996 trilogy where they finally become millionaires - it’s mentioned then her dad was in the Navy.

I LOVE the one where they have to pretend Cassandra is Rodney’s mum in Spain and he had to pretend to be 15 and join the ‘Groovy Gang’ Grin

Pelleas · 25/05/2020 16:16

I was just thinking about when Rodney was 'conscripted into the Groovy Gang' Grin. One of my favourite episodes. "Don't get ketchup on your shirt, Rodney!" "Et tu, Cassandra!"

CatsOfSummer · 25/05/2020 16:19

Pelleas yes! And him having a crafty cigarette and clanking through duty free with booze. So funny

CodenameVillanelle · 25/05/2020 17:13

Yes I was replying to @BoujiSnail who asked about raquel's back story

Pelleas · 25/05/2020 17:46

Ah, sorry @CodenameVillanelle - I missed that because another post had popped up in between.

I agree with this.
I really wanted to shout "don't marry him Cassandra" though! She seemed so sorted in comparison.

CatsOfSummer · 25/05/2020 21:13

I love how disgusted her friend was at Mickey Pearce when Cassandra gave them a lift back from the club

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 25/05/2020 21:22

I think they were well matched actually, physically they are similar, tall fair and slim, you often see couples who look as though they could be brother and sister and despite her being career driven she was quite innocent and a bit insecure and I don’t think she had many if any previous boyfriends, Rodney was gentle natured, funny and loved his family, he also clearly wanted to better himself so I can see why they got together.
