I have just binge watched series 1 for the first time and I loved it. I am not sure whether I can get through all 9 seasons though and I understand they are not necessarily sequential, so which ones are the "must watch" series in your opinion?

TIA.

Season 2 and 3 are my favourites, 2 is based around an asylum and 3 is a witches coven.

I really liked season 5 too although not many people seem to appreciate that one.

Thanks Violet. I am watching Asylum at the moment I'm hooked so I will persist with this series. Much scarier than series 1 that I had to fast forward some scenes! I think I'll watch series 3, 1984 and Apocalypse as I understand that ties in with series 1.

Season 4, Freak Show. It has Jessica Lange channeling Marlene Dietrich singing David Bowie's Life on Mars and Heroes. Plus Gods and Monsters by Lana del Rey. Epic!

I loved season 1,2,4 and 5. Apocalypse ties into season 1 and 3. Roanoke you can skip completely. Hotel ties briefly into season 3 aswell

I love freak show. I wasn't a fan of Hotel but there are connections to it in Apocalypse.
The most recent one, 1984, was OK. Very funny in parts

I didn't enjoy 1984 or cult; hotel was ok, but definitely weaker than the first 3 seasons.

Thanks for your opinions.

Freak show and Hotel were my favourites. Asylum could have been great but got a bit silly I thought

Okay, I am now on episode 10 of Hotel and I must admit, I am not feeling this one and much preferred the first 4 seasons. I might just skip this one to the final episode.

Hotel just seems like a blatant bastardisation of The Shining and Se7en, and is just out for the shock and gore. I know there are borrowed elements from classic horror films in each series but for some reason, I am finding myself fast forwarding a lot of scenes here.

I nearly skipped Freak Show but glad that I didn't. Naomi Grossman who plays Pepper was absolutely amazing, especially in her back story. She hardly has any lines at all, yet manages to convey so much emotion in her expressions.

That’s a shame you’re not enjoying Hotel. You wouldn’t be missing much if you skipped Roanoke! I didn’t really enjoy Cult either, haven’t seen Apocalypse or the the latest one though

Gin4thewin · 02/06/2020 11:58

I do like AHS, i think where most series would stop, carries on for a bit longer and answers those questions that would otherwise be left unanswered. Great series!

xsquared · 02/06/2020 12:55

@LBB2020 Roanoke seems to divide people. I haven't seen it but what do you not like about it that you liked about the others?

@Gin4thewin I was originally just going to watch a few series but a friend tells me that they are all connected in some way. Watching Pepper from Asylum's back story was very moving and she was one of the innocent characters I root for in that series, and there weren't many!

I watched the first season and asylum a few years ago then watched all the other seasons in the first few weeks of lockdown. I do feel hotel was very gory but they all got progressively gory tbh! I'm definitely glad I've watched them all and enjoyed looking out for the little mentions and ties to previous seasons.
