Wednesday 19 September
9:00pm - 10:00pm
ITV1 London
Try to ignore any unease you might feel in the early minutes of this three-part drama when a four-year-old girl vanishes from a crowded beach while on a family holiday in the summer of 1996. For some, it might feel too close for comfort to real-life events. But Torn soon becomes something other than a missing child mystery.
After young Alice disappears in the blink of an eye, we quickly move forward to the present. Alice's family seems to have re-established a normal life, despite never knowing for sure what happened to her. But her mother (Holly Aird) has always held on to the hope that her daughter is still alive, somewhere. Though you might be able to see where Torn is going, this doesn't diminish what is a surprisingly taut psychological drama. The excellent Holly Aird (see above) is so believable as a mother who cannot let go, and her powerful, low-key performance anchors Torn and stops it from turning into an overheated melodrama. Just one word of caution - avert your eyes after the credits roll to avoid the astonishingly revealing trailer for next week's second episode.

cutekids · 19/09/2007 22:01

well..it was pretty obvious that he would like to shag his sec. but is that relevant to this very poignant story...?!

cutekids · 19/09/2007 22:03

Anyway, on a much lighter note...i'm gonna watch Benidorm Uncovered or whatever it's called now.!

RTKangaMummy · 19/09/2007 22:04

Didn't relaise this thread was going and have just started another so I'll put it here too. I was hoping someone could tell me what was said on the phone when the police woman rang the mother - my telly lost the signal for that bit.

RTKangaMummy · 19/09/2007 22:11

she was asking about dishitinguishing marks

and she had a small scar on her knee

and a small birthmark on her shoulder ie where the tatoo was put

I was on the edge of the bed watching this and I forgot to breathe a lot of the time.

I had a moment when she said about the first child being different/special. I love all mine the same but nothing compares to that first positive test, first everything really.

BTW Don't forget Born To Be different tonight at 9pm.

fryalot · 20/09/2007 12:48

taped it, and have just finished watching it.

Twas very good.

MummyPenguin · 20/09/2007 13:46

I was a little surprised that this was run, given recent events. It made good viewing although there were so many similarities to the McCann's - even the little boy (at the start) was called Sean. The fact that it was their older girl that went missing, and they too had a younger DD and DS although not twins, a bit too close for comfort at the moment.

However, another good drama from ITV1 and I'm looking forward to the next couple of instalments to see what happens. When is part 2 on? Tonight or next week?

NAB3 · 20/09/2007 14:11

Other programmes changed story lines when Madeleine first went missing. There are always going to be programmes with subjects that are too close to home for someone.

RTKangaMummy · 20/09/2007 15:06

It is a 3 part series

Part 2 next week

RTKangaMummy · 20/09/2007 15:12

I must be in the minority here since I thought it was slightly disappointing and while I liked the story I thought it was too long to get to the bit where they found out and I cannot see how they are going to spin it out for two more episodes

alycat · 20/09/2007 15:18

Thank you

RTKangaMummy · 20/09/2007 15:20

You're welcome

I think next week and the effect of having her come to live with them is quite dramatic

Yes, I agree NAB3. Apparently, there was going to be a film released called 'Gone Baby Gone' I think it was due for release around the same time as Madeleine's disappearance, think it starred Ben Afleck and followed the same theme as 'Torn'. It has been delayed, for how long I'm not sure.

littleducks · 20/09/2007 15:48

i think there were more similarities with the film though, apparently the actress playing the abducted girl was really called Madeleine, and was broadly similar looking ie, blond, blue eyeed, similar hairstyle.

I was only intending to watch last night as i recognised the town in trailers but am hooked now.

RTKangaMummy · 20/09/2007 15:51

Where was it filmed?

OP posts:
NAB3 · 20/09/2007 16:53

The initial beach scene reminded me of Camber Sands.

mintchips · 20/09/2007 20:07

I only got to watch half of this last night cos it was raining and my sky went down

The town where she saw her was Slough

charliecat · 21/09/2007 13:31

BigBeeristheBigBeer · 21/09/2007 21:50
