Normal People - episode 4 - feel like I've missed something! (Might be a spoiler for those who haven't watched)

Previous to ep 4, I thought Marianne and Connell had discussed that he was applying to Trinity?

Then they had their prom, and he went off to uni. Suddenly she's there (stalker-ey?!) and even though he's new, she seems to have been at college for ages, even though they were in the same year at school.

I dont get it - what have I misunderstood?

They got into Trinity at the same time. She had always intended to go there and encouraged him to apply and study English when he hadn’t really seen it as an option before.

She fit in at Trinity immediately and made friends quickly whereas he struggled to find his way socially. A role reversal to their identities back home.

There just seems to be a disproportionate amount of time where she has settled in and created this new life for herself, but neither of them has been aware of the other one's movements. I know they weren't in contact, but we're talking a matter of weeks since they last saw each other. I dont feel like the timings are realistic!
