Phoenix and carpet? Can't remember it??

Anyone remember the children's programme from 70s about a Phoenix and a magic carpet? Seem to remember it was set in a Victorian house with an upstairs nursery?

I thought it was magical and would love to see it again.

Having a tough day and just thinking back to happier times. DaffodilDaffodilDaffodil

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/05/2020 16:17

I remember it, also Kizzy was a favourite of mine.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/05/2020 16:18

Sorry your day is crappy Cake

RHTawneyonabus · 02/05/2020 16:18

That’s one of the E Nesbit novels. Loved those when I was a kid.

Was Kizzy about a young traveller girl who got thumps on her head? Or am I mixing that up?

Just one of those days. Feeling a bit down as many do but sure I'll buck up soon.

Yes she was a traveller, can't remember about the thumps but it sounds about right. She was bullied terribly, by Prudence iirc?

YesThe Phoenix and the Carpet. I remember it and lived too. Have you looked on YouTube for it?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/05/2020 16:24

I don't remember the 70s thing but there is a new film out from the same series of books about different magical things and the resulting misadventures of the finders by E Nesbit. The film title has been dumbed down to "Four kids and it" so I don't hold much hope for the actual movie. A big favourite of mine from childhood reread many times but I think there's a lot of empire era stereotypes that would be problematic now.

The Phoenix and the carpet according to imdb. Sorry dont know how to link but theres bits on you tube.
Was Kizzy called the Diddakoi? Vaguely remember having to read the book in school. Only remember (probably misremebering) she gets adopted and who ever is looking after her says '3 sets of clothes is ok for now. One washed one wearing and one spare.' Seemed odd at time that stuff would be washed so often. Maybe i was just a skanky child. Also remember Stig of the dump and not understanding the ending.

Looks like The Phoenix and the Carpet is on You Tube. That and 5 Children and It were originally by Edith Nesbit. In one of them I remember a scene where an audience of scarecrow type figures that the children had made came to live and clapped. I was properly scared! Did they fly to the top of a tower then get stuck overnight? I never got the 2 books/series sorted out in my head.

Talisin · 02/05/2020 16:32

Yes, it’s the sequel to Five Children and It. Was it ?

Robertplantgoddess · 02/05/2020 16:32

Ohh and the machine gunners .Cant remember the ending of that either. And this was before alcohol entered my life!

Talisin · 02/05/2020 16:35

The new film is based on the Jacqueline Wilson book, which was ‘inspired’ by the E. Nesbit book.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/05/2020 16:37

Yes Kizzy was based on The Diddakoi, I didn't read the book though.
I do remember the girl who played her being very striking looking.

Menaimum · 02/05/2020 18:42

@talisin might give it a chance then. Jacqueline Wilson deserves a look.

@Talisin

Thank you for the link. So enjoyed watching it again. Must be 40 years since I saw it.
