Is anyone watching?

I read the books a few years ago I can't for the life of me think if it's following the exact same plot. Nevertheless enjoying the new series

Love this! Inspired like Alexander Dreymon, the very definition of swashbuckling!

Moanranger · 29/04/2020 22:58

Inspired? That is supposed to be “I especially like” Auto-correct defeats me

Hello I’ve started reading the books. I’m part way through the third book at the point where uhtred has gone to north and rescued Guthred from Sven and the slaver.

The show doesn’t stick exactly to the same plot as the book. Some events are switched around so the timeline is muddled up (the death of ubba for example) and other events just aren’t included at all. (Like Alfred going to Winchester with his little harp and getting beaten up) the also switch some character around too. Eg: In the book Steapa is tasked with duelling Uhtred to settle whether Uhtred is telling the truth about raiding in cornwallum, but in the show it’s Leofric that does it.

I’m really enjoying the books having seen the show as I can picture all the actors as I’m reading.

Love the show too. Alexander Dreymon is just devine! Also love Mark Rowley (finan) and Arnas Fedaravicius (Sihtric) what a beautiful trio.

Love this, books and series. Prefer it to Game of Thrones

Shosha1 · 01/05/2020 21:34

Loved all of the previous series and binged series 4 in two days.

This as well as Outlander have got me through lockdown so far.

I tried GOT, and only managed about 3 episodes. Tm

@ChandlerIsTheBestFriend - “Alexander Dreymon is just devine! Also love Mark Rowley (finan) and Arnas Fedaravicius (Sihtric) what a beautiful trio.”

This x a billion! Hard to think of a programme with a better set of eye candy than Uhtred, Finan and Sihtric!

Will start this soon (the viewing stack is weeks long ...).

Just thought fans might like to know it seems Amazon are doing the 11th ebook for free if you have Prime at the moment.

It's brilliant and moves the story along a lot quicker than the books. I love Bernard Cornwall and this is 'my' period of history but I think 13 books is a bit much for only about twenty years worth of story. And obvs Alex Dreymond and his sidekicks Finan and Sithric are pleasing on the eye 😍

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 17:14

Yes I’m on the third book and I’m wondering how there can possibly be 9/10 more books worth of story to be covered. There is certainly a lot more detail and events in the books that aren’t in the TV series but I’m not sure I will be able to complete the entire book series.

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 17:14

Many, many years ago I recall a note that the "60s revival" lasted longer than the actual 60s ....

Binglebong · 08/05/2020 17:38

I'm deeply ashamed of you all. Have you forgotten Erik?!

burblish · 08/05/2020 18:15

@Binglebong - Erik was indeed a fine figure of a man indeed, but nobody comes close to Finan and Sihtric for me (not even Uhtred - I know, sacrilege!). I also wouldn’t mind Uhtred having another vision or three of Leofric...

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 18:17

Much preferred his one handed brother Grin

Binglebong · 08/05/2020 18:42

Then I shall save him from your ungrateful selves. And Ragnor the Younger.

HugeAckmansWife · 08/05/2020 19:35

How do we compare LK to Vikings on Amazon Prime.. That feels more visceral and 'authentic' but LK is more fun.

ElenadeClermont · 21/05/2020 22:40

Just to say that Leofric (Adrian Bower) is free performance of The Winter's tale by Shakespeare's Globe.

Moanranger · 31/05/2020 22:59

I am currently enjoying the plot twist post the Saxon victory at Tamworth, but I thought that in real life Aethelflaed died before Athelred? Maybe I am wrong.
On a side note, the horses have got way better since the series moved to Netflix. Before, they rode plods that never moved faster than a walk, now much more galloping around.

Mytholmroyd · 20/06/2020 21:47

Finan definitely has the best/funniest lines in S3/4 - he is now my favourite. I don't think it as good as Outlander but it fills in the gaps. Been interesting comparing Dane/Viking weaponry and fighting styles with 18th century highlanders!
