I have been binge watching all seasons of 90s sitcom, The Nanny. I used to watch it when I was a kid and thought it'd be fun to re-watch it. Anyway, the more I watched it, the more annoyed I got with the main character, Fran Fine. I don't understand how, in the sitcom, she's popular, loved by the people around her, manages to charm every single man she comes across, and always gets her way despite being a liar, cheat and gold digger. I wouldn't mind it so much if Fran Fine was a character with some redeeming positive qualities, but in the sitcom she's horribly self-absorbed and selfish, very entitled, treats her family an friends horribly, and she isn't even very nice or caring towards the kids. Or anyone, aside from herself.
I have the same sentiments towards the character Rachel Greene in Friends. For a long time, I actually disliked Jennifer Aniston because I couldn't separate her from the character she played in Friends. I can't stand Sarah Jessica Parker for the same reason: I despise Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City. Both Rachel Greene and Carrie Bradshaw are terrible friends and partners, terrible listeners, extremely self-absorbed and selfish. I don't like how producers try to make unlikeable characters' dysfunctional traits appear as funny or lovable quirks when they are in fact just completely off-putting.
Does anyone else dislike certain fictional characters on TV or in film? What do you not like about them? And did your hatred for a fictional character negatively affect your enjoyment of the TV series or film altogether?
