A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Thread Regulars’ Top 5 Dramas of 2019
(courtesy of Hello’s kdrama spreadsheet, scores range from +10 if very good to -10 for truly awful)

  1. Her Private Life - 9.40 (5 votes)
  2. Melo is My Nature - 9.00 (5 votes)
3.= Crash Landing On You, The Crowned Clown, The Lies Within, and The Tale of Nokdu - 8.75 (4 votes)
  1. Hotel del Luna - 8.50 (4 votes)
5.= Romance is a Bonus Book, and Search: WWW - 8.17 (6 votes)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/ML is too dense to realise the 2ML/2FL is better)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

In My Secret Romance, SH’s personal secretary’s suit just made laugh out loud (the floral one). They are getting progressively more outré. It’s a great running visual gag.

I kind of like Sung Hoon but find his characters very one dimensional. Cold chaebol types (with the exception of the one where he was a webtoon writer). Plus he is a swooper kisser, does that lunge thing like CJH which is not very romantic.
Love his insta feed though with his rescue dog ☺️

boatyardblues · 26/04/2020 12:18

What’s his Insta handle, Betty? Asking for a friend...

Tell your friend it's sunghoon1983 Wink

bettys · 26/04/2020 12:44

How can you not like a man who cuddles his dog like this?

I love Sung Hoon's variety shows, especially I Live Alone. He comes across as being quite sweet yet savagely sarcastic at times. He is so devoted to his dog and it's been so nice to see how he cares for her. The combination of him and Henry Lau is pure comedy gold 😂😂

He has said before in interviews that he feels awkward doing kissing scenes and I think that comes across as well. He really needs more varied roles and FL that he has chemistry with.

boatyardblues · 26/04/2020 13:05

I do wonder sometimes if some stars are quite inexperienced relationship-wise. An early poster based in Korean talked about how poor PSHE is in schools and how naive some twenty-somethings are. Some start very early in the idol system and they have no dating clauses in contracts, also they seem quite restricted by their agencies for public dating even if it’s not contractually barred, plus punishing schedules and intense media scrutiny. For the ones that aren’t comfortable with ONS and hook-ups, it must be quite hard to make a connection and have anything like a normal relationship. You quite often see established stars talking about loneliness and the desire to meet someone they can settle down with (unless that’s a cynical ploy to stoke up the fans and I’m being played).

Agree monkeywench . Thought he & FL in I PIcked Up a Celebrity were cute but the romance in Level Up was just tacked on at the end

bettys · 26/04/2020 13:14

Some fair points there boatyard, plus there’s the whole having to go off to do your national service. So they may not get much practice. However some seem to be more intuitive coughPSJcough

I read that PSJ & FL in Itaewon were told to tone down the kissing at the end as he was supposed not to have kissed before Blush

helloswellow · 26/04/2020 13:20

I imagine that conversation was a bit awkward. Do you just say 'you're a bit too good at the lip smushing, please be worse at it' and walk off?

boatyardblues · 26/04/2020 13:27

Yes, some stars seem more natural in the kissing department and just generally more comfortable with it. (He isn’t HH KJW for nothing!)

My secret romance does get better story wise, but the acting is still ropey!!😂
