A new thread that's full of spoilers for those of us who are up to date and need a debrief, stat

That UK link doesn’t work for me but am reading Twitter.

Alex leaves Jo for Izzie?

And has 2 kids?

Is that right?
What the actual fuck?

DesLynamsMoustache · 06/03/2020 21:31

Tbh at first I hated it, but now I don't really know what else they could have done. Killing people off is too hackneyed. We've lost so many characters to being killed off that another one would just be bizarrely unfortunate for the world of Meredith Grey. And presumably they wanted to keep Jo so they needed to sever her and Alex somehow, as it wouldn't really have worked just pretending he was working off-screen somewhere but still married. So he had to go away, really, and the only neat solution to why he would randomly disappear is realistically Izzie as there was always a slightly unfinished element there.

I think where it falls down is how rushed it had to be. Had it been a gradual storyline, it might have actually been quite good, but they were kind of left up shit creek as Justin Chambers left really abruptly, presumably when the rest of the season had already been plotted out, so they had to find a solution that didn't involve him coming back or appearing again.

DesLynamsMoustache · 06/03/2020 21:31

*even for the world of Meredith Grey

GeraltOfRivia · 06/03/2020 21:38

Yeah. I would take that. I think it's ramming it into one episode and saying "there, done with that exposition about Alex now" was just a bit meh. But as you say, they had no time.

CallieTorres · 06/03/2020 21:41

@MrsFionaCharming
I don’t really like Jo, when I heard rumours Alex was leaving I hoped she’d go with him!

oh I so agree with you, it would have been better if Jo had been killed and Alex ran off to be with Izzy

There is NO way Alex would have gone off to be with Izzy, even with children, there is no way he would abandon Jo knowing her background

tribpot · 06/03/2020 21:48

Really poor episode. Up there with the 'flashback' episodes of Friends they used to do when one or other castmate was unavailable and/or in rehab. If you wanted to make it at all plausible, you could have had Alex deciding to stay in Kansas for the sake of the (adorable) kids, asking Jo to join him there and Jo refusing. Could all have happened off camera if need be and narrated by Jo. Dragging Izzie into it just felt like an excuse to blame Katherine Heigl for it somehow.

Now back to Amelia and what is sure to be yet another dramatic/traumatic birth. No-one on Grey's just goes and gives birth, you have to be stuck up a mountain or down a well or have a brain haemorrhage or open heart surgery at the same time.

GeraltOfRivia · 07/03/2020 06:45

Wasn't Teddy's birth in hospital and fine? Have I forgotten a major trauma. You're right about how hard it frequently is though. As much as I love Grey's, after 16 series there's just not much new they can do that's surprising.

I started rewatching s1 just to remind myself how young they were. Remember when Meredith's fingernail popping through her glove as an intern was a major drama.

OP posts:
tribpot · 07/03/2020 07:00

Teddy's waters broke whilst she was at Amelia's house and Amelia had just let slip that Owen had slept with Carina, who was due to deliver Teddy's baby.

Teddy unrealistically immediately goes into full labour and Amelia drives her to the hospital and gets stuck behind a multi-car pile-up. They end up being taken to hospital in a police car.

Teddy is still with Koracic at this point and Owen thinks it would be a great idea to declare his love for Teddy in the middle of labour.

So admittedly Teddy and the baby aren't in a life threatening situation a la Meredith, Callie, April and Bailey but it's not exactly a picnic!

Quite how Owen has managed to end up in two love triangles resulting in a pregnancy in 2 years is a mystery - or a testament to the decline of Grey's.

GeraltOfRivia · 07/03/2020 07:06

Jeez. I forgot about that Blush with the police car etc. She was with Koracic. He was at the hotel building the crib while she was in Labour wasn't he. It's all coming back now.

I stand corrected!

OP posts:
tribpot · 07/03/2020 07:24

Well, it certainly wasn't up there with April's DIY caesarian or Bailey's refusal to give birth in a hurricane or Callie have a car accident and a musical episode, or Mer nearly dying (as she likes to on a regular basis). I'm sure the writers congratulated themselves on having written a much more realistic birth storyline for once

GeraltOfRivia · 07/03/2020 08:01

Obviously I meant "wasn't" with Koracic.

It would be amazing if they could do one episode where everything went well. For everyone!

I miss the tension and expectation I used to feel. Like in the shooter episode, or when the big unique surgeries were a special thing. Now it's less about that and more like a soap opera. I'd love a good storyline about how the hell they're going to do a really specialist surgery and how it's going to work.

Once the built Mer up so much as a surgeon it's lost all the learning points and they haven't succeeded in replacing that. I've never cared enough about younger interns to be invested in their progress. Although i do like Schmitt and helm. But all their depth is about their personal stuff not the professional.

OP posts:
MrsFionaCharming · 07/03/2020 12:12

Yes, I think it was more relatable when they were interns. We can all imagine being out of our depth and scared in that position, whether we’ve been junior doctors or not. Very few of us can relate to being world class surgeons!

MrsFionaCharming · 07/03/2020 22:40

Possibly they decided not to kill off Alex so they have the option to bring him back in the future if JC mental health improves?

Izzies’s first daughter had cancer, Izzie had cancer, I predict in season 24 Alex will be bring new daughter back to Seattle for Meredith to treat some rare cancer thing.

GeraltOfRivia · 08/03/2020 08:18

If we're still around at season 24 so much time will have passed in Grey's timeline they will be back as interns 😂

OP posts:
tribpot · 08/03/2020 09:46

Yes, I would imagine by then Zola will be President, Ellis will be Chief of Surgery and Bailey will be running the Catherine Fox Foundation with Harriet Avery.

Dozer · 09/03/2020 17:19

Crappy way of writing out Alex. They could v easily have written out Jo too and had them move away together. Would’ve been crappy for the actor playing Jo but much better for the “franchise” IMO!

Izzie had aggressive cancer including brain tumours, the chances of her even being alive would be v small, let alone a parent of twins, unless through surrogacy.

Yabadee · 11/03/2020 22:10

Season 16 ep 16 on flixtor just now 🙌🏻

It’s a bit of a heart wrencher 😔 poor jo

CallieTorres · 13/03/2020 21:13

just watching S16E17 - what on earth is going on, is this some fucking station 19 crossover shit ??

Yabadee · 13/03/2020 21:15

Yeah I had to go catch up with station 19 after watching ep 17 of greys, it makes more sense when you watch that!

CallieTorres · 13/03/2020 21:49

@yabadee

thank you - woah! the ending! (i'll give it a mo before spoiling it on the offchance that someone hasn't seen it)

i'm only up to Season 3 ep 2 of Station 19, and oh look its a warren centric one where he goes off and does his own fucking thing
mr anaesthesiologist , surgeon, firefighter, medic, fucking hell to have those many professions he should be at least 75

Yabadee · 13/03/2020 21:51

I had to laugh when bailey said he changes careers like he changes sweaters 😂😂😂 she is so right!

Yabadee · 13/03/2020 21:52

I feel very proud of Jo after her talk with linc in the last episode, she’s looking at things the right way bless her

CallieTorres · 13/03/2020 22:00

and now (station 19) Bens got his Michael Boetcher to buy Jordans for!

Take It Back is the thirteenth episode and mid-season premiere of the tenth season and the 209th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Rita asks him about Michael Boetcher. He is shocked to hear that name. Derek asks if that's relevant. Rita asks why Derek has been sending his mother $3500/month.

Derek comes into Meredith's lab and puts his phone down on the desk before taking a seat. He says they found something. He says he played hockey in high school. She says she has a lot of slides to get through, but he continues. There was a kid named Michael Boetcher on his team. They were the most aggressive guys on the team. One day, at practice, Derek cross-checked him into the boards. They both went down, got back up, and kept playing. Boetcher didn't come back to school the next day because he had a brain bleed. Meredith asks if he died. Derek say it was worse. It was a pontine bleed, so he couldn't move or speak. He could only blink. Meredith asks if the president's people found out about it. Derek says Boetcher has been in long-term care ever since and Derek has been sending his family money and the president's people wondered why. Meredith says his deep, dark secret is that he's been sending money to the kid's family for 30 years because of an accident that happened when he was in high school. Derek says it's because he put him there. And then, Meredith says, Derek became a neurosurgeon, like a superhero and the president of the US has hand-picked him to carve out the future of medicine.

GeraltOfRivia · 14/03/2020 07:30

Does that mean the station 29 crossover bollocks is over for now. I don't watch it so just filling in the gaps by context. I don't want to have to watch another program for the one I like to make sense.

OP posts:
MrsFionaCharming · 17/03/2020 18:01

Ah ok. I don’t want Station 19, but this episode seemed really weird. I wondered if they’d cut something to make space for last weeks Alex episode and forgot to add it back in. Makes more sense now.
