Does Breaking Bad get less fucking misogynist?

I feel like I've been watching this all my life. American Beauty. Falling Down. That thing where because she went to the gym, Demi Moore was stronger than Michael Douglas or some such shit.

Girly doesn't put out or earn enough money. Man terribly emasculated because girly not putting out. Man becomes violent and feels much better.

Tell me it's better than this.

I have no clue what you’re talking about, but Breaking Bad is BRILLIANT Grin

I was considering watching this

I must be really thick but I can’t see the issue with American Beauty or Disclosure

Falling Down - excellent film but didn’t like how the divorce and child access was portrayed.

BaronessBomburst · 29/02/2020 23:58

Breaking Bad is indeed fucking brilliant.
And not misogynistic. It's many things, but not that. Confused

PermanentTemporary · 29/02/2020 23:59

Maybe I'm just being grumpy Grin

I'm into the third episode and enjoying it a lot more

It just seems like women are always the barrier to men living complete lives, unless they're silently having sex.

Well... no, it doesn't become more complementary towards women. Or anyone, really.

UYScuti · 01/03/2020 00:00

Could you be more specific perhaps?

Splitsunrise · 01/03/2020 00:02

Interested to know - how is American Beauty misogynistic?

AutumnRose1 · 01/03/2020 00:06

I watched the first season True Detective and thought it was brilliant

But just had to accept that’s their world and women are shown as per that world.

TalaxuArmiuna · 01/03/2020 00:08

I think it's generally misanthropic rather than misogynistic. every character is awful. there are no good guys. I stopped watching because I found I didn't care what happened to any of them because none of them had my sympathy.

BobbyBlueCat · 01/03/2020 00:28

What in God's name are you talking about?!

IdblowJonSnow · 01/03/2020 00:39

Talaxu, how could you not love Jesse?!
I wont say anymore so as not to spoil for anyone.
I don't remember thinking it was misogynistic although I watched it six years ago.

LonginesPrime · 01/03/2020 00:40

I always saw his wife and home life being tedious and annoying (despite the fact they're actually not in the big scheme of things and it's Walt with the problem) because he saw it that way. It was part of his internal justification for going so far off the rails.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/03/2020 13:25

I think as it goes along, I think its part of the point, that he was never a good guy gone bad, he was always a bad guy, and this is perfectly illustrated in later seasons. I don't think it glorifies him at all.

singme · 01/03/2020 13:52

Recently rewatching this and read an article by Anna Gunn about being the most hated character on TV. I think Skyler’s storyline is one of the best on the show. Currently on season 3 and she is so conflicted!
Agree that none of the other female characters so far have had much screen time. Ultimately it’s the Walt and Jesse show though!

Lycanthropology · 10/03/2020 09:22

I don’t remember it being misogynistic at all! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Actually I loved how Jesse called everyone “bitch” - male or female!

SinkGirl · 11/03/2020 18:04

I don’t agree that BB is misogynistic. I think the female characters are generally rather dreadful people but so are almost all of the Male characters.

Plus if you watch BB you can then watch the (even better IMO) Better Call Saul which contains one of my favourite female characters ever.

BlackieBooBoo · 11/03/2020 18:13

BB is the best US series I've ever watched and in fact I have watched it 4 times.
It has a well deserved 9.5 rating on IMDB.

AParallelUniverse · 11/03/2020 18:15

I loved breaking bad. Never something I would normally watch or be interested in. But it truly was excellent.

Lycanthropology · 11/03/2020 18:35

@BlackieBooBooAh, that’s interesting to see it stands up to repeated rewatchings; I may go back to it myself now.

I’m envious of people who’ve never seen it and get to watch it for the first time!

Binglebong · 11/03/2020 18:42

You have summed it up perfectly. I managed to about season 3 before I realised I was wasting my time and if I hadn't got into it by then I never would.

BretonKitten · 19/03/2020 03:44

Weeds is a lot better.
