Anyone seen this? Took me a while to get over the first scene 😲 😳😳 but so intriguing. Haven't quite built myself up to watch episode 2!

Yes, watched the first ep on the strength of the Jordan Peele connection and impressive cast. The reviews I have read have been luke-warm comparisons to Tarantino pulp horror and Inglorious Bastards to pretty damming accusations of exploiting the holocaust, though the writer is from a family of WWll survivors. The flashback scenes were very hard to watch and I'm not sure how the whole investigation squad set up, if that's how it pans out based on the intro, will hang together with the subject matter. Not sure I liked it enough to carry on with it. What about you?

ThanosSavedMe · 25/02/2020 22:34

I’m watching it and enjoying it, thought that is totally the wrong word, you know what i mean

OutComeTheWolves · 27/02/2020 21:44

I'm four episodes in at the moment and still not sure what I think.

I like how stylised it is in a sort of superhero movie style - it's definitely a bit different. I also like how the heroes are Jewish. It's definitely time we moved away from that trope of Jewish passivity. I think the main characters seem quite interesting too - it's not often you get older heroes in tv shows.

But the inclusion of fictional acts of torture in the camps (the chess game for example) didn't sit comfortably with me at all. The holocaust was horrific- I don't believe we need to sensationalise it for people to understand how bad it was or to have sympathy with the vigilantes. I also don't think Josh Radnor is a very good actor so he's grating on me a bit!

tigerwhocametoT · 28/02/2020 17:06

I'm thinking of getting prime to watch grey's Anatomy, does anyone know if season 15 is on there?

meemaw12 · 02/03/2020 21:43

I've just finished hunters. Brilliant ending. Looks like there'll be a second series.

Myfanwyprice · 03/03/2020 23:18

I really enjoyed it, but I’m confused as to how it’s possible that Jonah is Ruth’s grandson, if only 32 years have passed since the end of the war and he seems to be 18 - did it say when his mum was born? Or how old she was she had him?

ThanosSavedMe · 04/03/2020 11:32

I’ve finished now and whilst some of it was very good I thought the last two minutes was awful and ruined it.

I also agree with some of the backlash. There was no need to invent situations, the real events that took place were horrific enough and making ones up may give some nutters the opportunity to say it was all made up.

Anyway, even saying all that, it was worth watching and I do hope there is another season

Myfanwyprice · 04/03/2020 12:42

Agree completely about the last two minutes, it did not need that. And also understand the criticism and backlash.

It does seem to be set up for another series, still a few things unanswered.

Feelingfestivenow · 04/03/2020 12:48

Started to watch it, got to episode 2, then gave up really did not like any of it at all, DH agreed as well and he tends to persevere more than me.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 04/03/2020 13:01

Dying to talk about this ... are we a non spoiler thread?! Smile

Myfanwyprice · 04/03/2020 15:23

Ooh it would be good to have a discussion with spoilers, although I don’t know how well I followed it, I might not be much help!

ThanosSavedMe · 04/03/2020 16:21

Think we might need a different thread for spoilers

gospaniel · 04/03/2020 18:29

Myfanwyprice I had the same conversation with DH about ten minutes ago. And Ruth looked like she was in her late 70s, so I thought they got the continuity wrong there.

I really enjoyed it though, I loved the Sister Harriet character. Would be good to see what direction a 2nd series would go in.

OutComeTheWolves · 04/03/2020 21:09

There's only 14 posts & some people have stopped watching it. Let's just do spoilers so we can talk about the ending!

I noticed the grandma didn't look as old when you saw her a year earlier going to see Meyer and I wondered if maybe it was trying to show that Jonah and Meyer saw her very differently. Ie one saw her as a helpless old lady and one as someone fiesty and courageous who he loved.

Agree that the timelines don't massively add up though unless jonah's mum was very young when she had him?

Myfanwyprice · 05/03/2020 09:18

I wonder if it was supposed to be set in the 90’s, but then it was changed to the 70’s to give it a more retro feel, another 20 years would’ve made the characters ages work. Mindy and her husband, looked early 20’s in the scenes during the war, but looked older than 50, 30 years later.

I’m very curious about who Harriet was speaking to on the phone, did I miss who that was?

OutComeTheWolves · 05/03/2020 13:03

No it didn't say who she was talking to. Maybe some sort of spy company in the U.K.?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/03/2020 14:28

It definitely grew on me and I really like some of the characters especially the FBI lady.

I loved what I though was the last scene (with the soup), hat would have been perfect. I thought the actual ending was just a bit daft! I'd a feeling Faux Chanel lady would have a silly link to Hitler but never expected it to be that silly! Where are the little Aryan boys coming from? When Travis killed the other henchmen she mentioned she'd virtually raised them ... do you think he'll be a gonner at some point when she's had her use of him? Was the milk at the weird ceremony poisoned? She said something about getting what you deserve?!

I'm a bit confused about the Myer/Wolf/Same Person thing still. How did Ruth not know? I'm confused by the time line and how he managed to become Myer.

Loved Lonnie Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/03/2020 14:29

Oh meant to say, Out I really love your theory about how they saw Ruth!

gospaniel · 05/03/2020 14:43

Outcomethewolves I thought Harriet was speaking to her friend at Columbia who analysed the blood sample. They seemed to know each other from the convent as she called her Rebekah, they seemed to have their own hunter thing going on. And she implied her nun thing was all a ruse.

OutComeTheWolves · 06/03/2020 06:48

Ah maybe you're right go.

Right up until they mentioned going to Europe, I really thought they were setting up season 2 as the remaining team working alongside Millie in her crack squad.

SinkGirl · 11/03/2020 18:17

LOTS OF SPOILERS

I'm a bit confused about the Myer/Wolf/Same Person thing still. How did Ruth not know? I'm confused by the time line and how he managed to become Myer.

I think she was on the way to figuring it out. She knew the wolf had sent all his money to Mann and she booked an appointment to see him - Jonah just assumed it was him, but I’m sure Ruth was smarter than that, because she specifically mentioned the date Meyer left in her letter, and that was the date of the wolf’s disappearance in the file she obtained.

So did “Meyer” kill Ruth?

What part of the timeline confused you? When the camps were liberated, he replaced him then, wrote a letter and left. Had extensive plastic surgery and then built a new life in NY.

Ruth would have gotten pregnant right around the time of the liberation, so 32 years before the show is set. The time doesn’t really add up unless Jonah’s mum was 14 when she had him.

Also, the actor who played him was 27 at the time!

I did appreciate it stylistically but I do feel it’s not handled very respectfully and I struggled with that. All the cartoon baddie nazis were a bit ridiculous.

That imaginary scene with Mindy and Murray broke my heart. I’m not a crier but I really cried.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/03/2020 19:04

Spooky SinkGirl ... DH and I were just discussing this when clearing away after dinner Grin

I was confused by how he became Myer so seamlessly. Did he kill and become him during or after liberation? As I'd thought Ruth and Real Myer went to America together but he disappeared then ... surely she'd have known it wasn't him when he returned ? Things like mannerisms, voice, even smell, you'd know.

Actually I think I need to watch that episode again and pay more attention.

Anyone else remember when he, Lonnie and Rocky were with Manure Nazi lady ... she addressed him as the pretender'! Smile

SinkGirl · 11/03/2020 19:52

I think they said he killed Meyer in the camp (we saw Ruth and Meyer together at the camp after the liberation), buried him in the forest and left the letter and necklace for Ruth.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/03/2020 20:10

Yup, definitely need to watch again then!

Patch23042 · 03/04/2020 23:33

The timeline was off, definitely. They should have set it in the 1980s to make it plausible that Naomi (born 1945/6) could have been the mother of an 18 year old.

The ending spoilt it a little for me.

Loved the scene where Mindy was reunited with her late son. Very poignant.

Lots of superb acting.

I would watch S2 for Millie and Harriet, my favourite remaining characters.
