I’ve watched all 4 seasons and just about to start season 5.

But I’m still waiting for an answer to something that happened in S1 Ep1 that I still don’t have the answer to.

In S1 Ep1, Claire’s husband Frank sees a man in a kilt looking up at Claire who’s in the window of their B&B

I presume it’s Jamie?

But do we know how or why he was there?

It was a ghost. The author talked about it a few years ago. There are several theories as to what it means: maybe he died briefly at Culloden, as she said he was 25 as a ghost, perhaps it's something to do with his dreams.

Gah, pressed 'post' when I meant to write more!

It's not been resolved in either the books or the show.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/02/2020 19:03

I've been wondering the EXACT thing!

I think maybe its a very old Jamie after Claire has died

DesLynamsMoustache · 20/02/2020 19:05

Diana Galbadon said he was 25 in the ghost scene so it's the ghost of a young Jamie, not an old one. I think I like the theory that he was close to death at Culloden and he wanted a final look at her, or something like that.

Thank you for that link Bee

Looks like I'll have to wait until the end!

We're all waiting with you, it's definitely the biggest mystery of the show/books.

I want to find out but at the same time I don't, because then Outlander will be over and I'll be sad.

DoSomethingBob · 25/02/2020 21:19

My friend, who is a huge Outlander fan says that years ago, at some book convention thing Diana Gabaldon admitted to someone that she had meant to have Jamie die at Culloden and it was to have been his ghost but her publisher saw potential in a much longer series but they forgot to edit out the ghost.
No idea how true this is but I can well imagine it happening.

yourestandingonmyneck · 25/02/2020 21:39

I could see some truth in the above theory, that Gabaldon had originally intended him to die age 25 at Culloden.

Alternatively, I had always just seen it as Jamie's ghost regardless of what age he was when he died. He may have died an old man but his ghost is just him in his prime, and how Claire would have remembered him.

(As for how/why Claire is in the future and didn't die back in the 1700s with him.....I'm not sure)

Oh I've been desperate to know this too, I thought I'd missed something. Or I keep expecting them to travel forwards. I don't understand how Roger can travel through but Jamie can't.

Scarzo · 01/03/2020 23:30

@FleurNancy, Roger is a descendant of Geillis, so inherited his ability to travel through the stones from her (I think)

^ That.
