After About a Boy and Skins, Nicholas Hoult seems to have become the poster boy for disaffected teens. He's a similarly angsty and often annoying late adolescent in Coming Down the Mountain, written by Mark Haddon (author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time). He's David, whose brother Ben (Tommy Jessop) has Down's syndrome. Increasingly furious at the central role Ben's needs take within the family, David goes completely off the rails after the family moves to the Peak District from their London home (again, for Ben, so he can attend a better school). Sometimes it's a road movie à la Rain Man, sometimes it's an only slightly more grown-up version of Hollyoaks. But there's something winning about it. Jessop is entrancing as the brother who sees an awful lot more than he lets on, and Hoult's charm means David isn't quite as awful as he might be.

I have to say that "sometimes it's an only slightly more grown-up version of Hollyoaks" doesn't sell it to me....

This had me in floods of tears

that was so bloody sad!!! but a lovely ending

aargh, vomit, that was sentimental and predictable.

I thought the programme was fab - even made me cry at one point. Mark Haddon is an excellent writer.

but I didn't like the happy ending - far too sacharine sweet for me.

I prefer a Hardy-esque ending where it all ends in tears, misery, bloodshed, and a high body count!

I was a trifle disappointed as it had such good write ups. I found it predictable, but confess to warming to it after the fall from the mountain scene, and yes, a sugary end!

It was good but I felt it was a bit predictable and was left wanting more.

You got as far as David pushing Ben off mountain?
Ben rescued by helicopter, David takes him out of hospital, they go back to campsite and David flirts with blonde girl from Waterloo Road and she tells them about her weird religious parents (message: everyone is different and there is no need to be embarrassed), police come and take them home.
Ben tells David about girl he fancies. David tells parents (because for the purposes of the plot, they never really listened to Ben), she come round for tea and she Ben and go off to room and Ben later tells David he wanted to have sex with her but she didn't want to so they didn't (thus neatly sidestepping engagement with any difficult issues concerning people with learning disabilities having sex).
Ben and David sit on hillside together, David draws cows and Ben tells him they are wonky, lots of happy smiling because David is no longer jealous and they are all happy.

I saw this. It was great. So sad in parts I could hardly bear to watch. I really felt for both the boys.

Didn't miss much then - i felt it was very predictable, never grappled with any of the issues it raised and was a tad cliched

Well as a mother to a child with Down's syndrome and a mother to a child without Down's syndrome, I found it interesting to think about the level of anger one sibling can feel towards another, and understood it and felt yet again that having this third child (due in 3 weeks) is a good idea. Not because DD2 will want to push DD1 down a mountain but because the intensity of being the only NT child and feeling responsible for you SN's sibling can probably be really intense at times.

It was also wonderful to watch a boy with DS acting and doing such a great job.

I thought about that as I was watching the prog thomcat, who would be watching it who is in the same situation , and would it be upsetting for them. How old are your children? Did you feel the mother was centering on the boy and not understanding her other son? I did enjoy the end though when they had to accept I felt a level of letting go, that he was very capable of making his own life and was indeed as normal if thats the right word, as any other teenage boy. I have known Peter, he has Downs for 50 years and I just somehow never think of him as being different, arent we all? Also I know a lad, well hes in his 40`s but I always think of him as being still a lad, he has learning difficulies, he is engaged to Alison who has Downs, they are just the swetest couple together, they have been engaged now for 4 years and now go away together on holiday, always come back giggling, I am always teasing Sean about when is he going to make an honest woman out of her! I have rabbited on, sorry!
