Anybody else seen this? We saw both parts on BBC4 this week. Mindboggling.

I did. I had no idea how much of the massacre was recorded. It was horrific.

WilheldivaHater · 10/01/2020 16:59

I just watched this on I player this morning.

The recording of the actual massacre was harrowing. I have to say I was surprised at how little I knew about this. I was under the impression it was simply a mass suicide, I didn't realise that there were people wanting to leave or the shooting at the air strip.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/01/2020 17:02

I didn't either. I was 17 when it happened. I knew next to nothing about it. I find cults baffling because I can't see how people get drawn into them.

I saw one part of it, didn't realise there were two. However I have seen other programmes before about Jonestown and read a book which detailed all the murders. There was also a drama TV film years ago on the subject. which was excellent I've never forgotten it and would watch again, just found it:

Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (TV Movie 1980 ...
www.imdb.com › title

It's a terrible story. I wonder if Guyana has ever recovered.

Some v good podcasts on this by “You’re Wrong About”.

Horrifying.

Dozer · 10/01/2020 22:45

There were many, many years of build up. In the US then escalated after the big move.

Deathraystare · 11/01/2020 15:15

Only saw first one as clashed with something else but was interesting.

eminencegrise · 11/01/2020 15:25

It was awful. That woman who stabbed her own children to deather, horrific.

FthisS · 11/01/2020 16:18

Just dreadful, 300 people unidentified mainly children.

MerryDeath · 11/01/2020 16:33

ooh excellent. i have listened to a podcast on this will look out for it.

WhiteVixen · 11/01/2020 16:39

Casefile did a very good podcast on this tragedy.

nancy75 · 11/01/2020 16:43

Watched this yesterday. Shocking.

I was a toddler when it happened, although I knew of it I had no idea how many people actually died - utterly horrific, those poor children.

icelolly99 · 16/01/2020 12:21

How have I never heard of this?

Cocolapew · 16/01/2020 21:50

Just watched this, I knew about Jim Jones, the church and the subsequent deaths but not the ins and outs.
Absolutely horrifying, those poor children.

artisanparsnips · 21/01/2020 11:29

I was a child when it happened, and so wanted to watch because I never really understood, all I knew was that something terrible had happened. I too, had no idea about the airstrip or anything.
