Do you ever feel let down after watching the first series of something which has been brilliant?

And the next series is kinda alright but doesnt have the same excitement? I felt that recently with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel it was actually the third that made me think its lost its way. And Pose which blew my mind the first series. The second one just didnt make me cry with it. I still think it was brilliant for what it did but I dont want to see a third.

This is why I respect Russell T Davies so much as a writer. He tells complete stories, he never milks that cash cow for a second or third series that would fuck it all up.

EachandEveryone · 29/12/2019 10:04

Killing Eve is another one.

The Affair - first season was amazing and then downhill quite badly for the subsequent seasons.

Hels20 · 29/12/2019 22:28

I second Killing Eve. The first series was amazing. Second series kind of lost its way.

stumbledin · 29/12/2019 23:49

Nearly always! But too often stick with the second and third and then wonder why I think current tv isn't worth the time.

I would even include Shameless which when it first started was quite sharply scripted and political, in the sense it made it clear the main female character was having to sacrifice her life to prop up her male relatives. Then it just became about shock value, ie sex, drugs, etc., etc.. As it C4 only wanted a drama that fitted in with their poverty porn "documentaries"!

Mr Robot
Orphan Black
(I like SF)

The Good Wife

In fact might be easier to try and name one series that has managed to maintain the same level of the first one!

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 30/12/2019 10:34

Oh yes, The Good Wife - that was amazing in the first series!

Landlubber2019 · 30/12/2019 10:37

This is us...... Loved the first series . Enjoyed the 2nd. Not seen the 3rd as I can't find it in the UK 😢

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/12/2019 10:39

Yes.
I recently watched Hookup Plan on Netflix and loved the first season.
But the second one was really bad. I don’t want to give any spoilers but the characters I loved seemed to completely change from one season to the next. They were different and not for the better.

RedRiverShore · 30/12/2019 19:08

Landlubber2019

This is Us series 3 is on Prime, I loved it, it’s better than series 2

Redcrayons · 30/12/2019 19:16

killing Eve definitely. I don't think I've even finished the season series.

MargotsBumpyNight · 30/12/2019 19:22

Have found this recently with Designated Survivor. First series: explosive, action, intrigue. Second series: mehhhh.

southeastdweller · 30/12/2019 19:29

I thought Last Tango in Halifax lost it's way after the second series.

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 30/12/2019 19:31

I've just trudged through the third season of Mrs Maisel wondering what went so wrong.

There are many series which start great until the point during the first series where they got renewed for a second series and then they tread water.

Or World on Fire which didnt go anywhere at all because they were waiting on series 2.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/12/2019 19:40

I've just watched the second series of You which came out Boxing Day.

It is shockingly bad, excess voiceover, unbelievable relationships, plotholes

I haven't watched the 2nd Maisel yet but had heard the 3rd was a stinker.

They shouldn't do it for the sake of it if they have no good ideas.

The Affair got so ridiculous, I didn't watch the last series.

CupCupGoose · 30/12/2019 20:03

The walking dead. How that program is still going, I have no idea. The first 4 seasons were so so good but its awful now. I had to stop watching.

redexpat · 31/12/2019 16:54

Glee got weird in s2.
Although it is possible for shows to pick up again - Greys s5 and West Wing s4 weren't great but they got back on track.

EachandEveryone · 02/01/2020 19:37

This is us is another one I agree. I gave up on Walking Dead ages ago.

Big little lies absolutely fits this criteria. Was obsessed with series one, series two was meh.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 03/01/2020 20:23

It seems like so many programmes milk it beyond necessary these days, it really annoys me, they should end leaving you want more.

I loved the first Killing Eve but the second series just felt like paint by numbers and was dire, apparently they're doing a 3rd series Hmm.

The last series of Game of Thrones had some corking episodes but nothing like the earlier series' and the last episode was so disappointing.

Agree about Big Little Lies, I binge watched the first series on catch up but could barely get throught the first episode of the second series.

Was really looking forward to the new series of The Crown, but I everything about hated it.

Bootsuit · 03/01/2020 20:53

PlanDeRaccordement I agree about The Hook Up Plan. I loved the first series, it was genuinely funny, you were invested in the characters and it was a highlight amongst the other dross on Netflix.

The second series was dismal. I'm still really annoyed by it!

I think that the writers / producers didn't expect for Netflix to pick it back up and just rushed it out.

pinksoda35 · 03/01/2020 21:00

Bloodline- it just got worse as each season went on

Ilovetolurk · 03/01/2020 21:11

I think person of interest improved and by season 3 it was a completely different animal and some episodes got near perfect imdb ratings

Worst second series for me was the good fight. Unwatchable

Lost, GOT, dexter and fringe all had appalling final seasons

midsomermurderess · 03/01/2020 23:27

Agree with Killing Eve. Series 2 didn't draw me in. It could have ended with 1 series. On a cliff hanger.

midsomermurderess · 03/01/2020 23:29

Yes, Bloodline descended into full-on ridiculousness by the end. Again. 1 series would have done.

Freyanna · 03/01/2020 23:32

I agree about Killing Eve, I loved the first series but stopped watching the second series.

Not a patch on the first series.
