IIRC there was some mystery about who his parents are [not Mandy] but it seems to have been forgotten.

Is Marlon, or rather the actor who plays him, perhaps due a long holiday? I'm thinking they might be going to stretch this out forever so he could be wrongly convicted until Rhona Marple uncovers the culprit.
