Rich kids go skint - channel 5

I have just downloaded the channel 5 app and binging on some tv whilst the biggest is at nursery!
One thing that always throws me with this program... Why do they always go to the local corner/convenience store to do their food shop? Surely that's more expensive and even if you have to travel somewhere a bit further it would be worth it?
Or is there some other logical reason? Maybe it's just because of the programme and it being easier to film there? Unrealistic though!
Still enjoying watching though 😂

I have always thought this too. Do you think maybe it could do with something like, not everyone can get to a big superstore or can drive so this is the easiest most convenient place to shop?

Could be completely wrong lol

That is very true, I guess I live in an area overloaded with big supermarket express shops everywhere!!! Cormershops are probably a rarity at this point

I always wonder this too - in the age of internet shopping, can't imagine why they couldn't just get an Asda delivery. Corner shops are expensive!

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/11/2019 14:53

Because most big supermarkets have a minimum spend for a delivery or the charge can be a lot. Because they don't drive. Because there are few buses and they are expensive. Because they don't have decent access to the Internet. Because they've never been properly taught how to budget and cook. Lots of reasons. Also the case that in general, the well off have better access to things that can save them money. People on low budgets often have to buy cheap appliances or cheap shoes etc etc, they then don't last, cost to repair or replace. It's a hard cycle to break out of. Coin meters etc cost more so they have less access to cheaper tariffs, less access to cheap borrowing etc.

All fair comments!
I wasnt sure if it was just for the show or if they usually shopped there. I noticed on a few episodes some families had products from big supermarkets but when they asked the rich kids to do their shop they ended up at local shop.

Definitely because the film crew need permission to film places and permission from big companies isn't as easy to get as walking into a shop and speaking to the owner

Yes, that makes sense too. I haven't watched all of these but do remember one where they went specifically to the person's preferred shop as it was ethnic items they needed to buy for a recipe.
