Anyone watching? Apologies if there is already a thread.

I loved it. Helen Mirren is, as always, excellent. Although I thought there were shades of Elizabeth II in her portrayal. The sets are sumptious, as are the costumes.

I found the dialogue a bit hard to hear like in the recent BBC dramas, but that might be me?

I probably could have done without the sex scenes, that didn't really add to the story. I get it that they were trying to show the debauchery of the court - but I can believe it without having to see so many bottoms (purses lips and channels Mary Wodehouse)

Anyone else got an opinion?

Just started to watch, love it so far, worth watching for sets alone

Potemkin is supposed to be gorgeous........hmm.

And, yes, the pumping sex scenes were irritating. Will watch next episode though.

Great sets and costumes. I don’t get the attraction to Potemkin but as it goes on you see the relationship develop and you can feel the connection.

It was weird how they kept going on about how hot Potemkin was! Surely there are enough good looking actors!

I didn't get the attraction with Potemkin either, he seemed singularly unattractive to me. But I get that it can be subjective.

I did read something that said Catherine would have been in her 40s at the time they are portraying. Now, Helen Mirren is amazing, but in her 70s even she can't pass for 40! So I found that suspending my belief a bit.

Looking forward to the rest of it anyhow, love a good costume drama!
