Watching the series all over again . Loved it then and still do now. I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable about the story line involving Mr Pamuk all those years ago. Mary clearly said no several times and then succumbed to his charms.
Watching it today was even more uncomfortable in my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not overly sensitive usually , however ,his insistence on carrying on despite her protests and then getting his way ( to a point at least ) was pretty grim viewing for such a gentle program.

Are you one of these people who think that she retained her virginity by erm some other form of intercourse?

Whatjusthappenedthere · 29/09/2019 21:18

No, he was stark naked on the bed when found. Im not so invested to give it much thought beyond the scene where she clearly tells him no. Explains the concept of no quite eloquently I thought but he carries on any way. Just felt uncomfortable that the whole scene came and went with no regard that he kind of forced himself on her.

It's years since I saw that episode but I don't remember him forcing himself on her.

Yep I rewatched it the other week and felt exactly the same. It really does come across as rape. She says no several times.

And then that aspect of it is never mentioned again.

He didn't force himself on her, she said no initially and then yes. She wanted him but also needed reassurance that everything would be alright, ie no pregnancy. When she was reassured she was happy. Dreadful tragedy that he died, no one could have anticipated that.

I thought the same op. And I couldn't understand why when Cora asks her if he forced himself on her, she said no. When he did.

Theo James (currently in Sanditon) played that part didn't he? Seems like a very long time ago doesn't it?
