This is the thread for Episode 11 (season 3) of The Handmaid's Tale.

We are watching on Channel 4, UK pace and have only seen episodes 1 - 10 so far.

I think what he meant was that they assumed they could break down the handmaids to the point that they would submit, but they hadn't understood how strong maternal love is and how hard to break. Not that they thought maternal love wasn't significant.

Not only were the commanders caught on the hop with their belief about "maternal bonds" but as I said upthread they seriously underestimated the Marthas. Did they really think that dressing intelligent, educated women in grim outfits and asking them to do housework would stop their brains working? I love the way the aunts, commanders and wives all concentrate on subduing the Handmaids while ignoring the clever, cunning and seditious Marthas who quietly listen in to their dinner discussions and husband/wife chat, read and disseminate confidential stuff left on desks while they dust, have an elaborate communication network going on under everyone's nose, develop complex skills such as bomb making , set up underground railway organisations etc etc.

Forget the Handmaids, it's the Marthas who will bring about the downfall of Gilead.

I went out for a bikeride this morning and passed a neighbour who called out 'Good morning'. i meant to say 'Beautiful day', I really did.

What came out was

'Blessed day'!!

Of course they did. Men are forever underestimatIng women's abilities and overestimating their own.

The poor woman at the bar being mauled was heartbreaking.

It's the last episode in the third series tonight on RTE 2 in Ireland.
I'm looking forward to it but will probably have to watch it from behind my hands.

It’s baffling me just how much C Lawrence has handed over power to June. He looks at her like a puppy that’s been kicked! And no questions about how she is going to carry out her plan. If I was him I would want to know all the details. Not least because he has knowledge that could help her. He could advise on timings or routes or guardians who are on side etc. Why does he not want to know the details? Especially considering his wife will be at huge risk in the escape attempt.

Think rent boys might be a step to far, even for Jezebels! That would be gender traitor stuff - possibly a sin too far for pious rapists!!!!
