A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here, but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

One Spring Night (Netflix)

Not Korean but just try it

We occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although we may have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (Ji Chang Wook) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Boatyard! Ditto!! Very very excited for vagabond and melting!! Please 🙏 to the kdrama gods we will not be let down!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

bettys · 15/09/2019 14:17

Agreed! Also looking forward (on a lesser scale) to Beautiful Love Wonderful Life With Crazy Kang, Tale of Nokdu and Joseon Flower Agency all on Viki

Vagabond is going to be on Netflix isn’t it?

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 15/09/2019 16:35

I know no one else is watching Her Private Life at the moment but it's got some relatively raunchy kissing happening! 🤭 For a kdrama anyway.
And also lots of kissing while keeping one hand in your pocket, which looks weird. Is it to show that Ryan is so cool??

bettys · 15/09/2019 16:55

Most Park Min Young dramas have more realistic snogging 🤣 I noticed the hand in pocket thing too, I think it’s meant to be cool but also HH KJW seems to walk around with one hand in pocket so maybe it’s a model thing. Have you got to the bit in the wood workshop yet?

boatyardblues · 15/09/2019 17:18

There was a general consensus at the time that PMY and HH KJW’s snogging in HPL was 🔥. Only recently bettered by Puff Guo and Jasper Lui’s later clinches in Before We Get Married (but not the weird stuff near the beginning) and the first 5 mins of that saucy film I have already forgotten the name of (sadly) that we were all talking about a week or so ago. I would appreciate a reminder. 😉

bettys · 15/09/2019 17:56

I think it was My PS Partner or Whatcha Wearin'?

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 15/09/2019 18:49

It was the wood workshop bit that prompted me to post! I was trying to find the list of saucy dramas but I couldn't remember which thread it was.
I know there's hardly ever any actual shagging in kdramas but I don't know how they can just go back to holding hands and not just rip each others clothes off 😂

Reminds self it's not real

boatyardblues · 15/09/2019 19:12

Ahn Bo Hyun’s insta feed has some lovely photos of the HPL cast and crew, including HH KJW. The photos of him & his friends in the roof top pool in Vietnam deserve special mention. I just got told off by DH for looking at ABH’s insta feed at the table. 😂

bettys · 15/09/2019 19:31

TheGirl there is actual raunchiness in Before we Get Married (Taiwanese in Viki)

bettys · 15/09/2019 19:33

I got up to ep 3 of Radiant Office and hot a bit bored so I am now watching Hit The Top which is fitting my mood much better at the moment - in need of some froth I think

Bea · 15/09/2019 19:48

Bettys... Ohhhhhh! It's right proper froth!! Cappacino froth!... More froth than coffee! 😂 😂 😂

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 15/09/2019 19:54

ABHs instafeed makes it hard to give the excuse to DH that I'm just interested in kdrama stars acting skills...

bettys · 15/09/2019 20:06

The Girl 🤣🤣🤣👍

Bea Suits me! Plus it has Kim Min-Jae who was in Romantic Doctor (cute nurse), The Great Seducer (cute friend) and will be in Joseeon Marriage Agency

bettys · 15/09/2019 20:08

Apparently Kim Min-Jae trained as an idol for years, you can tell from this Soompi clip of him dancing to Uptown Funk

boatyardblues · 15/09/2019 20:12

I keep going back to ABH’s insta feed. There are so many generous pictures on there. He’s possibly insufferable in real life, a proper gym bore, but he may equally be lovely.

Radiant Office is complete. Solid feelgood kdrama, in the vein of Radio Romance.

Bea · 15/09/2019 22:50

bettys... 😱😱😱... He's got the moves!!... Ohhhh! I could watch a good dancer all day!! (you know it's my weakness! 😂 😂 😂)
Oi you lot! I can recommend Man To Man for good kdrama nonsense! It's a bit daft but it's tripping along very very nicely! I'm on ep 8 and I'm loving the supporting cast! They're all great and it's all very sweet! Between this and Hit The Top.. I'm managing to amuse myself very cheerily! 😂 😂 😂 👌👍👍👍

boatyardblues · 15/09/2019 22:54

I’m still having grief with dramafast, even using Firefox so I’m going to have to wait on the Viki subs for episode 12. I loved ‘rabbit’! And the whole conversation about the level of nuttiness was hilarious. I hope 46 gets together with the station chief - he clearly has a thing for her. Like they say, it takes all sorts.

bettys · 16/09/2019 09:25

Bea me too! 🕺🕺
I got halfway through Man to Man and then stopped, I can’t remember why now. Both MLs are good, I think I went of to watch Park Hae-Jin in Cheese in the Trap and just didn’t go back or skipped to the end.
I am enjoying Hit The Top, it’s very silly but good fun and Cha Eun-Woo is proving he has more than one facial expression 🤣👍

bettys · 16/09/2019 12:00

off to watch 🙄

bettys · 16/09/2019 12:51

In Hit The Top I can’t work out which ML will be with FL. By the rules of kdrama it should be the ‘dad’ as she did the accidental falling on top of him kiss but that would be odd

Bea · 16/09/2019 14:11

Yeah... But we've had humans fall in love with robots!.. (absolute Boyfriend)... And supposedly live happily ever after (are you human)... Oddness doesn't compute in kdrama! 😂 😂 😂 😂

boatyardblues · 16/09/2019 18:49

Spoiler for Are You Human above! ^ (I just resumed it at ep 3 last night.)

boatyardblues · 16/09/2019 18:57

Sorry. That sounded chippier than I meant it to. Loooong day.

OP posts:
bettys · 16/09/2019 19:00

Let’s be honest it’s racehorse Seo Kang Joon so even if you had a full blown episode recap you’d still watch 🤣🐎😉
