Anyone watching? I don't think spending a week in Leeds will have much impact on Phoenix!

I can't stop looking at Mel B'a face. It's so plastic looking.

If Mel Bs kids are nice and down to earth then it makes me think that a part of Mel must be like this too, though I haven’t watched the full episode as yet.

JaneJeffer · 15/08/2019 23:16

It came across as ungrateful when Phoenix pointed out all Mel's parents had done to help her and Mel said she did it herself because she did the auditions, etc.

I think Mel B has had issues with her own parents due to her marriage to that controlling Stephen guy, and there was issues because Mel B said that she hadn’t lived in a certain area of Leeds and her mother and sister couldn’t understand why she was saying this because apparently they did live there, somewhere called Kirklees or Harehill in Leeds, anyway this argument was about 5 years ago now, they thought she was lying due to embarrassment but then she wouldn’t have went on this show we’re discussing if that had been the caseConfused so I’m very mmmn at this...

Confused

Did anyone else wonder if there was another reason Phoenix didn't stay in the Harold Grove house? I noticed the housemates weren't around when Mel B came round at the end of the week and wondered if they'd been a little too star-struck for comfort. They were very quick to ask who her famous mum was at the start.
Weird seeing Leeds 6, though, as I lived there 30 years ago.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 01:45

Was Kirklees and Harehill both bad areas Harriet?

bakedbeanzontoast · 16/08/2019 02:11

Harehills isn't the best of areas. I always thought she was from chapeltown at least H thought so (he grew up there)

Goatrider · 16/08/2019 07:34

I wonder if the good manners of the children came from their schooling? Or with Jack, his mother. Gordon Ramsay is such an odd man.

I wasn't convinced with mel's story of sending people to the prostitute or drug dealer 🤔

I also thought Phoenix may have been uncomfortable with the housemates. I don't think it mattered that she didn't stay, she got involved with everything else and seemed genuinely interested in the people she met.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2019 07:36

I didn't take her seriously when she said about sending people to the drug dealer or the prostitute

AuntieMarys · 16/08/2019 07:37

Kirkstall 🤣

billybagpuss · 16/08/2019 07:43

I thought jack came across very well.

I wondered if it was something to do with the housemates that phoenix didn’t stay there too. They were very star struck.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 14:41

Ahh not Kirklees then!!😂😂

SuburbanCrofter · 17/08/2019 10:45

It was a it strange that Phoenix didn't stay with the students, but they did discuss later on how all the students were away for the holidays. It showed the students giving Phoenix a key, so perhaps they just stayed for the meal to settle her in then left, and she felt uncomfortable staying there on her own.

I agree that neither Gordon nor Mel B seemed comfortable with accepting that they had achieved success because they had people helping and supporting them along the way.

SuburbanCrofter · 17/08/2019 10:47

Yes, particularly was it was an end terrace house so she would only have had one set of neighbours Grin

Inappropriatefemale · 17/08/2019 10:55

Yeah Mel B is just trying to emphasise that living where she lived was just so awful when in actual fact, it’s called ‘the real world’, people that live in very expensive houses and have tons of money live in such bubbles that it makes you wonder if they would survive otherwise, Mel B would because she began there but someone who was born into it would struggle in the long term, though I thought Jack Ramsay would have coped.

It’s not so much that Gordon had help, it’s that he was and still is, a very talented chef and most folks aren’t talented at that same level, so to criticise people for not getting out is offensive to the people that still live there. I still haven’t fully watched the Mel B one but she would have needed the help, I mean can she actually sing or was she just in the ‘right place at the right time’, most wannabe singers do need help ‘making it’ no matter how good they may be, being a chef is totally different as it’s all about your cooking abilities and autotune won’t solve a badly cooked meal like it does a crap singer!

JaneJeffer · 20/08/2019 00:31

I've just watched the Michelle Mone one on +1. Bethany is a lovely girl. She seems a bit lost.

OP posts:
smileannie · 20/08/2019 03:37

Given the very privileged life I imagine she has lived so far and the emotional distress she may have experienced due to her Mums marriage, I thought she came across a very nice young woman. It’s great that she is back in touch with her UK family now.

Goatrider · 20/08/2019 13:42

She did seem like a lovely girl and it was sad to see how upset she was and that her Mum clearly didn't understand. Michelle just seemed to see work (and money) as more important than anything else.

Inappropriatefemale · 21/08/2019 01:15

The Michelle Mone one has been my fave episode so far, Michelle said to her daughter that she had never said no to her and she’s lucky that her daughter wasn’t spoiled because of this, although material things aren’t what the daughter wants.

Can’t believe MM thinks that she hasn’t ‘made it yet’, is she for real?

Spermysextowel · 21/08/2019 02:33

“Auto tune won’t solve a badly cooked meal” is true, but having the right money & PR behind you will help you reach a level that’s not necessarily merited. Ask a lot of chefs who they admire most & it won’t be Gordon (at least not in terms of cooking).
I’ll be interested to see the Naked Chef Bares All tomorrow. I know someone who was involved in the first programme. Jamie slides down the bannister (but it’s not a flat he lives in). Goes shopping (on a moped that’s not his). Cooks dinner for his chef (who he doesn’t work for & has hardly met) & his friends (who Jamie doesn’t know but have been supplied by the production company). This is probably why I watch so much Dave!

JaneJeffer · 21/08/2019 12:34

I have learned from this programme that no matter how much money you have your clothes can still look like crap.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 25/08/2019 22:59

The last episode was very revealing and open

The house was really nice inside though! I mean the one that's supposed to be 'poor' I'd like a house that looks like that. And Michelle Mone's was wow!

purpleme12 · 26/08/2019 23:24

The footballer and his daughter in this one were the nicest and most down to earth people out of the lot

nowifi · 28/08/2019 13:18

Yes I agree, she came across really lovely. It just shows you can have all the money in the world and still feel lonely, both her and Michelle's daughter seemed to be quite envious of the 'poorer' lifestyle and the sense of community they had. Feel much better about my tiny house now Grin

Goatrider · 28/08/2019 21:34

Yes another lovely young person.

Was interesting how she envied the closeness of the family and the feeling of belonging to a community. Shows that there are somethings money can't buy.

Mrstraveller · 29/08/2019 16:35

I've watched all of them except the Paul Ince one. The children do seem to have been far nicer than the parents. Also the parents banging on about how tough they'd had it annoyed me in a way. Gordon Ramsey had moved a lot but then ended up in a council maisonette which looked like it was in quite a leafy area. Could a council estate in Banbury be that bad? He would have had free education at catering college and was provided with housing for him and his sister. East end of Glasgow, ok might be bad, (I don't know not been there) but again the bungalow Michelle Mone's parents had seemed fairly nice. I think the worst in terms of housing was probably Mel B in the first house she lived in in Leeds but her parents seem to be have been extremely hard working and aspirational. They then bought their own home which seemed very nice? I thought Mel B's daughter was lovely and seemed to make friends easily. She seemed genuinely interested in the people she met in Leeds. I just don't think any of the parents backgrounds were as awful/tough as they made out for the time in which they were brought up (I'm a similar age).
