Handmaids Tale what happens to the children?

Hi can anyone remind me about the children in Gilead? Watching Sunday nights episode when the young girl was talking to June about having babies. Will she become a Handmaid? I thought that if they were in pink they were in commanders families, and what do the boys in the families do? Can anyone clear this up for me. Tia

I think they will get married and have kids. The handmaids are handmaids because they have sinned, had affairs etc.

Just married and live normally? Like the family that helped June at the beginning. I though pink meant they were commanders property who would marry the next generation of commanders and then have their own Handmaids, Martha’s, guards etc everyone else wears grey clothing don’t they

I'll have to check back too but marrying the next generation of commanders would make sense. I've not read the book but might get it. I love it but hate having to wait a week to see what happens!!

Thanks headlock I’ve read that now. I didn’t realise fertile wives in blue could have babies I just thought that the commander just did the ceremony with th handmaids.

The boys will become the next commanders. The girls will go on to become commanders wives, and either have children of their own or receive handmaids to bear the children for them.

However, if they commit a crime that Gilead sees as serious then they will be punished severely. Punishments for serious crimes are either being sent to the colonies or, if you are fertile, being turned into a handmaid. We've already seen that commander's wives aren't safe from mutilation either.

So as long as they stay on the straight and narrow, the 'confiscated' children will grow up to be the next generation of commanders and commanders' wives.

I suppose becoming an Aunt would also be seen as a noble profession for a commander's adopted daughter, if she doesnt want to have children or can't have any of her own.
