This is the thread for Episode 8 (season 3) of The Handmaid's Tale.

We are watching on Channel 4, UK pace and have only seen episodes 1 - 7 so far.

Please, NO SPOILERS.

Last week's thread took a rather strange turn, so please, play nicely people.

And I shouldn't have to spell it out, but when it says "Please, NO SPOILERS", that means we don't want people who have watched ahead to come on here and deliberately or inadvertently reveal what is actually going to happen in future episodes.

Anything else is speculation, whether that is based on what has already taken place in the TV series or is based on events in the novel (including the Historical Notes epilogue).

Just because something happened in the book doesn't mean it's also guaranteed to take place in the TV series.

Blessed day.

Did anyone else think that the Handmaid’s Hug (not sure what to call it) round Ofandy was like a heart? Interesting that both OfMatthew and OfJoseph were now on the outside of the group.

I think June has lost her mind (or is losing it). Having said that, her Commander is really inconsistent (which must be very unnerving for someone in her position).

MadgeMak · 28/07/2019 21:34

You can see flickers of the current Aunt Lydia in the old her too, the look on her face when the boy's mum asked if she had a boyfriend or girlfriend.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:35

Aren’t the aunts allowed to read?

CruCru · 28/07/2019 21:36

The Aunts are allowed to read and write.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:38

Thanks cru

Crinkle77 · 28/07/2019 21:38

he little boys mother would no longer have to put up with being groped by men.

confused

Is that sarcasm? The mother would either be a handmaid or in Jezebel’s. To be groped against her will at any time by any man who wanted to

No it's Aunt Lydia's/ Gileads twisted logic. She said in an earlier series that they now had freedom.from rather than freedom.to.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:43

But they are being groped and raped and in this world they can’t make the choice to get away from it. How would Aunt Lydia see that in any way as a freedom? It’s punishment for their sins. Of being “promiscuous” in the previous world.

Kitsandkids · 28/07/2019 21:43

I’m guessing Aunt Lydia’s heart was broken by the principal and it’s quite worrying that I think I’m going to feel sorry for her!

Selfieface · 28/07/2019 21:43

Why didnt they unwrap thecord around that baby’s neck?...

MotherWol · 28/07/2019 21:47

Selfieface I wondered that! Surely you'd attempt CPR on the baby?

Roussette · 28/07/2019 21:47

Ahhhh so Aunt Lydia's always been a nasty piece of work then

RedHeadDiana · 28/07/2019 21:49

she acted like that because a man rejected her?

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:49

So aunt Lydia reported the mother to social services to punish her for encouraging AL to go out and meet a man and she’s got rejected. So she took her anger out on the mother and child. Wow.

DrinkReprehensibly · 28/07/2019 21:51

There didn't seem to be any modern medical equipment present at all. You'd think that with every baby being so precious they would at least try to save her... Or is it considered God's will or something?

Crinkle77 · 28/07/2019 21:51

Joxer that's the whole point. They can't see that their logic is completely flawed.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:54

Well I mean thats a pretty obvious flaw! Grin these aren’t stupid people. Aunt Lydia isn’t stupid. They no more believe they are saving those women than they do horse shite is lemons.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 28/07/2019 21:58

Shock at June!! She’s deranged!

AL called the handmaid “Natalie”!

Crinkle77 · 28/07/2019 21:58

Wow!!!!!

OytheBumbler · 28/07/2019 21:59

Janine!

Kitsandkids · 28/07/2019 22:00

What was that? Was June controlling her somehow, or did she just flip, or what? I thought it was going to show June was just imagining it, but no.

MadgeMak · 28/07/2019 22:01

That was really weird. Surely they'd have gone for a leg shot to stop her seeing as she's pregnant.

Applesandpears23 · 28/07/2019 22:01

Well that was unexpected.

RHTawneyonabus · 28/07/2019 22:02

This is all so silly, why wouldn’t they monitor that baby properly and attempt CPR on a pregnant handmaid? They have modern medicine and babies are a scarce resource.

CruCru · 28/07/2019 22:06

Poor Janine.

Nothingcomesforfree · 28/07/2019 22:07

No a Aunt Lydia is seeking the safety of religion rather than the effort involved in being datable again. She really wants love...god is her go to in the absence of physical love.
She stitched the mum up because she was trying to make herself a worthwhile person ..saving the boy from his feckless mother.

June is nasty because she strong too. As she says “ you do what you do to stay alive”.it’s never as easy as just good guys and bad guys.
