A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus (non subscription, possibly dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is linked below, but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all of the previous threads:

Thread 6

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*

The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)

Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
My Strange Hero (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier

Not Korean but just try it
Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean food/cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious shortening. Some of the regular favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

54 days?! That'll be torture

boatyardblues · 04/08/2019 22:22

He’s been away for 2 years. I think we can manage another couple of months. 😂

BWGM Unlikely scenarios Number umpteenth:
Just how did NeverLettingGo ex-gf get that job???

boatyardblues · 04/08/2019 23:02

Betty - Amor Fati. I’m genuinely befuddled. Was the mute woman real or a figment of his imagination? What did you make of it?

boatyardblues · 04/08/2019 23:07

Age of Shadows (1920s period thriller with Gong Yoo and Mr Sunshine) looks good on Prime but is sadly an extra charge.

bettys ill never know, but I sincerely doubt her qualifications or are rich parents and a pretty face qualifications in their own right?

bettys · 04/08/2019 23:25

Boatyard - re Amor Fati I was befuddled too but decided that she was a figment of his imagination as she doesn’t seem to react with other people.

bettys · 04/08/2019 23:29

It must be connections, she keeps hanging round that woman with the odd short haircut. But ex-gf has been kept by Kehuan for 10 yrs so it’s a Machiavellian move by the higher up woman to keep them together. Frustratingly subs are at 77% so am missing chunks of info

boatyardblues · 04/08/2019 23:30

Catching up on BWGM ep 9 now (yup, filling my boots). I have to comment on WeiWei’s hideous white shoes, which look like something Nurse Ratched would wear in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Do they not have stylists for these shows?

I was befuddled too but decided that she was a figment of his imagination as she doesn’t seem to react with other people.

I came to the same conclusion, as no one else ever comments on her or talks to her.

bettys · 04/08/2019 23:33

Boatyard there’s a change of style in ep 10 which is a marked improvement (and highlights why her clothes are so dreadful)

bettys · 04/08/2019 23:37

Amor Fati was a slight film but I was impressed with JKH’s acting. He’s good in WTDCYName too, though I’ve yet to watch the 2nd episode

helloswellow · 04/08/2019 23:56

Sat down with a jigsaw and decided to rewatch some episodes of Sassy Go Go, the first drama I watched with Ji Soo in and it made me all warm and fuzzy. I forgot how dark and intense some of it is to, considering it's a school based drama.

boatyardblues · 05/08/2019 00:00

OMG. Just got to the bit where Weiwei tells Handsy she wants to just be friends, best friends. How he didn’t spontaneously combust I’ll never know. Also Kefei hilarious sniffing her: “I can smell Kehuan on you.” She’s such a great character for all the wrong (right?) reasons.

OP posts:
bettys · 05/08/2019 00:07

After all that steaminess too!

Kefei is hilarious , there’s a great bit in ep 10 where she’s ‘looking after’ hot gossip guy and can’t resist feeling up his pecs 🤣

boatyardblues · 05/08/2019 00:56

Yes, they have convincing chemistry now he’s stopped handling her like a sack of spuds. Grin

I feel accomplish. I'm caught up on everything but Watcher and Hotel del Luna. I lost my enthusiasm for Watcher but if anyone says it's improved I'll get back too it.

We just tried a different Korean restaurant. I’ve just had a disappointing jajang myeong.

wtf? MN is mad today

helloswellow · 05/08/2019 15:12

Disappointing jajangmyeon sounds like a weird high fantasy concept prog rock band.

boatyardblues · 05/08/2019 15:18

Is it meant to be bland? I’ve never had it before, so it might be characteristically underwhelming. I was trying something new. 🤷‍♂️ The seafood pancake was underwhelming too - about 1/3 of the depth/heft of our usual Korean restaurant. 😕

OP posts:
helloswellow · 05/08/2019 17:04

It's blander than Chinese black bean sauce but it should still have some flavour. I've never really been a fan, much prefer jjamppong.
