Welcome one and all Tennis

Missed all of the doubles but saw that Andy and The Player Formerly Known As PHH won - good on them. I was too drained after the Rafa match to watch it!

Meanwhile Delpo has begun his 3x daily physio to start rehab of his knee. Stuff like that is the reason I can't sympathise /indulge Kyrgios, Tomic, Evans or any other talented self-sabotager (saboteur?!) - there are players like JMDP who'd give anything to be out there. I mean, Evans, fair enough, he's obviously making a good go of things now, so I'll take him out of it Grin but the others - no.

JWT did not sound too impressed with Tomic getting his prize money deducted...

Jane I hope your headache gets better - sounds like a dangerous combo of risk factors! Flowers

JaneJeffer · 04/07/2019 22:19

Yes but at least Kyrgios is out of the equation now. Can't make any promises about the wine and cheese though.

AutumnCrow · 04/07/2019 22:26

I nearly dozed off while imagining Kyrgios playing mixed doubles with Medusa as his partner. Blimey, I thought.

Fizzywinegum · 04/07/2019 22:28

Jane I think you’ll be ok now that the Kyrgios factor has been removed - stick with the cheese and wine.

Private I completely agree with you - it doesn’t seem fair that people like Kyrgios and Tomic are allowed to play when they don’t really care and can’t be bothered to train or even try and win a match.

I feel exhausted - DH says that I’m not allowed to get myself in such a state about tennis again!

magimedi · 04/07/2019 22:33

I am also exhausted from the Kyrgios/Rafa match.

DH was wondering if Kygrios is bi-polar? Would that explain things.

I don't like or admire Kygrios at all but he can play tennis - such a great shame he's had no guidance & is such a tosser. What a waste.

PrivateIsles · 04/07/2019 22:42

That's the thing magi - when he "settled down" (it is like talking about a toddler) it was sort of a normal match then, and surely it would be better for him to be like that all the time and be without all the "drama" as well? You know, just do what you can do. But he doesn't. Confused

Fizzy I did laugh about your concerned DH! Yes the whole thing was a bit much!!

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 04/07/2019 22:56

Fizzy I'm picturing your DH as Lord Grantham now Grin

Fizzywinegum · 04/07/2019 23:02

He’s been winding me up by pretending (I think) that he’s a Kyrgios fan - he laughed at the underarm serve (but so did Rafa)

Just watched some clips of Baghdatis' match - v emotional ending and Berrettini handled it beautifully (now there's a young guy with a lot of talent and class). Well worth a watch, lovely Marcus, what a gorgeous smile and what a player (brought a tear to my eye though!).

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/07/2019 07:48

Berrettini did handle it well, Private reminded me of Bautista Agut in Melbourne after he beat Murray. He knew the moment wasn't about him. Now that shows maturity- and he is younger than a certain someone Wink(who would not have done the same, I bet).
Marcos looked so sad, bless him. It was all very emotional.

Bit of a draining evening all round reallyGrin.
I didn't bother with the doubles, and am hoping I can watch some matches today that I am not so invested in!Grin

MyGastIsFlabbered · 05/07/2019 07:53

Surprise day off today as DS2 threw up last night. What delights have we got today?

PrivateIsles · 05/07/2019 08:22

It's a bit weird today, these halves of the draw don't seem to have as many good matches. I think Halep v Azarenka will be good, and Coco Gauff plays again later.
In the men's, Djok, Anderson... but the match ups don't look that good. Does mixed doubles start today?... Will have a look at the schedule.

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/07/2019 08:29

Djok's half has lost so many of the big contenders.

Roanic must be playing today- and I think he's playing Opelka.
How many times will height be mentioned in that match??! Grin

PrivateIsles · 05/07/2019 08:55

Raonic v Opelka, yes that's right Raahh. Am sure height will be the main talking point! Grin And if they don't say "not one for the purists" are they even commentators?!

Anyway I hope Milos wins. I wish this was Stan v Raonic, if Stan had just taken one of those break points against Opelka!! Now that I would have been looking forward to.

With all the kerfuffle yesterday Grin I haven't even seen any of Kerber's match. Was she on Court 2 - the Graveyard??!

OP posts:
colourlessgreenidea · 05/07/2019 10:02

I’m still kerfuffled after yesterday!

Thinking about it, on top of the code violation, the spitting, and the abuse of the umpire, K openly admitted that deliberately aimed the ball at his opponent, he didn’t see why he should apologise, and that Rafa should take if because he has lots of money/titles.

Surely readily admitting to intentionally trying to hurt your opponent requires sanctions? How can the LTA let that slide? Confused

kazzaD66 · 05/07/2019 10:04

Yes, she was private

Mixed does start today.
As with his doubles match last night, Andy is the only match not assigned a court and it won't be played before 5.30pm. The powers that be want them on the first available show court again.

Also, I bet Serena won't be known as "Andy's doubles partner", in the way that PHH is Grin

colourlessgreenidea · 05/07/2019 10:19

Also, I bet Serena won't be known as "Andy's doubles partner", in the way that PHH is

That poor lad - he was completely ignored in the post-match interview, until right at the end, when they asked him if he thought Andy had played well! Hmm

PrivateIsles · 05/07/2019 10:28

colourless that doesn't surprise me at all about Andy's press conference! Some of these journos are shameless.

You can hit the ball at your opponent, but if that had hit Rafa it probably would have injured him! It was bloody hard. But I don't think he said he'd intended to hurt him as such - just hit him, which is ok Hmm

I don't know why he thought Rafa's Slams/winnings had anything to do with it though!

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/07/2019 10:33

kazza oh, I'm sure she won't be. Grin

I think it was terrible form that Kerber ended up on court 2. Nishikori and Norrie on CC, and the women's defending champion on court 2...

Colour I heard Dick admitting he hit the ball at Rafa deliberately. And yy- with all other stuff- someone has to look at that match and think something has to be done, surely? But it's like the Serena match at the US Open, that inexplicably became the fault of Carlos Ramos Hmm.

I also really, really blame the tv coverage and the BBC for how they built it up , all over the place , as some massive grudge match- and were baying for blood. I watched a lot of bits of different matches in the morning/early afternoon- and it didn't matter which one it was, they were all at it.

The fact I'm still cross about it today , annoys me Grin- Rafa won. But it shouldn't have been in such ugly circumstances- and Dick shouldn't be allowed to keep doing it.

Raahh · 05/07/2019 10:37

And as for ignoring PHH- well he is the 'Tennis player formerly known as PHH' as I said before. It was inevitable. Murray didn't win the match on his ownHmm.

Raahh · 05/07/2019 10:40

Dick should also realise that it takes commitment to win slams. And he can't be arsed with that. Wants to do the bare minimum.

And he would have more money if he didn't waste it all on fines. Grin.
