Does anyone remember this programme? I cannot remember what it was called or how long ago it was on but it must be at least 5, maybe 10 years ago?....

It was a group of real men (not celebs) who joined a monastery for the programme to experience what it was like to live as a monk. It was really interesting and threw up some unexpected feelings from the men about life and their futures.

I think it was a BBC2 programme, over the course of a number of weeks.

remember it I think it was called "the Monastery " BBC 2005 and a followup called the Monastery revisited in 2006

You've just got me started watching this. At ten minutes in, I'm wondering whether the BBC's main criterion for choosing the candidates were that they were wankers. Grin

I watched this at the time as the monastery in question is near me. I suspect the programme makers pushed to have some kind of narrative arc- the main one they push to the fore in the latter stages, Tony, is seen talking about how he used to be a producer of porn, I seem to remember, but then thanks to his monastic experiences he saw the light. He later went on to be the man behind the misogynistic Tumblr about women eating on the Tube. No idea how that sits with his supposed spiritual enlightenment. Maybe he has changed now...

Is that him? What an unmitigated shit! I mean, he was awful anyway, but that really caps it. Angry

Let's hope he's redeemed himself now.

Amazing, thank you! God, it was actually 14 years ago then?! Shock

This sounds great. How are you watching it, Sherkin? It's not on iPlayer.
