Designated Survivor. Is it just me?

Having watched season 1 and 2 I actually classed this series as a poor man's West Wing. Nothing really stand out about it but good to plough through when nothing else on the box.
Statred watching season 3 today and can't work out if it's me or not, but is there suddenly a lot more swearing and sex?
It seems to have turned into a less classy House of Cards.
Has it been taken over by new studio who wanted to "pep" it up a bit.
Just seems like it's altered somehow.

Seasons 1 & 2 were an American network. They cancelled it, and 3 is done purely by Netflix.

I thought series 1 was awesome but 2 got too try hard with adding ‘funny’ bits. Absolutely hate Lyor.

jessicawessica · 07/06/2019 22:39

Yes Lyor was very condescending to EVERYONE.
He seems to have disappeared. It's only about 3 weeks since I watched season 2 but cannot for the life of me remember what happened to him.
I just can't get over the F word every 5 minutes. Emily swearing is odd.

I'm still on season two and struggling to carry on watching. It's very bland Confused

jessicawessica · 07/06/2019 22:51

Yes, bland, that was the word I was looking for.
But season 3 just goes off on a "let's show how grown up we are by adding sex and swearing".
I remember watching The Tudors. Loved series 1 and 2 then series 3 just turned into this "let's see how slick and sexy we can be" thing. So I stopped watching.

Ok well you've motivated me to continue....or accidentally on purpose go straight to series 3 Wink

AudacityOfHope · 07/06/2019 23:02

Yep we gave up around the same time. Once he had proven he was fit to be president it just became a bit 'so what' and filled with nonsense plots.

And don't even get me started on the travesty that Madam Secretary has become. Angry

Lentilbaby · 07/06/2019 23:06

Oh no! Madam Secretary is on my to-watch list 🙄

AnyFucker · 07/06/2019 23:14

I gave up after the 1st episode

I thought it was absolute pulp

Desmondo2016 · 07/06/2019 23:15

Oh nooo I loved 1 and 2 of DS and was looking forward to 3!

AudacityOfHope · 08/06/2019 09:09

Madam Secretary started off pretty great but it's gone so far downhill. Almost every episode is vomit-inducing virtue signalling, with Tea Leoni the only one who can stop the Israelis and Palestinians hating each other, or save the Serbs and the Croats from decades of hatred and misunderstanding. ConfusedConfused

giddyyup · 08/06/2019 09:19

I watched the first 2 of season 3 last night and still love it. Nice to see no Lyon so far though 😃

RingtheBells · 08/06/2019 10:05

I have downloaded it to my iPad as we are going off in our caravan next week and I can watch it in the evenings and when its raining I quite likes series one and two though obviously its not up to West Wing standard

jessicawessica · 08/06/2019 22:26

Well I let DD watch 1&2 but 3 is not on the watch list for her I'm afraid.
The C word and MF makes it unsuitable for her, which is sad because she was quite enjoying it.

Just finished S3E2 - where the fuck is mike Ritter!!!!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/06/2019 17:22

LOVED series 1. What an amazing premise for a political thriller. Struggling through series 2.

VenusStarr · 10/06/2019 20:47

Dh and I said the same, watched a couple of episodes of s3 yesterday. They seem to have storylines wrapped up in the episode. I'm pleased that the english girl storyline with Hannah was dropped but thought there would be more to the Emily storyline. It's like they thought 'no, can't be bothered with that one, let's do the same old'.

It's very try-hard. Not sure we'll finish this series.

WhatAGreatDay · 11/06/2019 15:20

I've nearly finished Season 3. It's certainly not as good as Series 1 and it's trying very hard to cover lots of "issues". They even had a bit where three characters were competing on who was the most downtrodden. Too much about Alex's trans sister and outrage about "bathroom laws".

It's reasonably enjoyable, but it has become a bit of a poor man's West Wing.

Grumpymug · 11/06/2019 15:29

I just started watching 3 and I wondered if I'd just not noticed the sex and swearing in the first two! It is a bit odd, but I'm only 3 episodes in, hoping it may get a bit better. Really enjoyed 1 and 2

springgreensunshine · 11/06/2019 15:34

Another one who really loved season 1, quite liked season 2 and gave up on 3. What a shame.
It was the sort of story that had to come to an end really. They stay in government for a while, eventually everything returns to some kind of normal. It's a difficult story to find s good ending to. But that's no excuse for just dragging it on and on.
And Hannah Wells just got ridiculous. There is no way she could have survived everything that was thrown at her, no way at all.

MrsSchrute · 11/06/2019 15:40

@springgreensunshine - Hannah survived??????
This thread needs a spoiler alert!!
But yes op, poor mans West Wing is a good description.
I noticed that some episodes were directed by the guy who played Danny in WW.

springgreensunshine · 11/06/2019 17:28

Oh no I don't mean it as a spoiler. I don't know, was there some sort of real life or death thing at one time?

I just meant it seemed like every episode she was surviving shoot-outs and escaping from locked crates and dodging bombs and hand grenades and car accidents, escaping from dead end alleyways, freeing herself from Houdini-type situations without even messing up her hair.

She started out as a believable character then became ridiculous. She might be dead now for all I know, I gave up watching properly a long while back. But my guess is she's an indestructible robot and will never die.

Myusernameismud · 11/06/2019 17:31

Sorry to derail, but I love Madam Secretary still. Yes, there's a bit of virtue signalling going on, but Henry is my favourite and I love their relationship. It probably works so well because they're together in real life!

But anyway, Designated Survivor.. DH has watched it from the beginning but I just can't get into it at all Hmm

AudacityOfHope · 11/06/2019 19:46

I hadn't realised she and David Duchovny had divorced!

Penguins1 · 14/06/2019 21:34

Loved this show! Just finished watching Series 3. I love Emily, Aaron, Seth and little P's characters!!! Smile
