Black Mirror season 5

I loved the previous series of this, and White Christmas might just be my favourite piece of telly ever, but I did not enjoy season 5 very much at all, and I was just wondering if I'm alone!

It's mainly because there haven't been any new ideas for ages. Somebody's personality being uploaded to an inanimate object? Done before, in White Christmas and Black Museum. People's lives being ruined by over-reliance on technology? Well, take your pick of any previous episode, but Nosedive springs to mind. Immersive video game experience/escape from the real world through VR? USS Callister and San Junipero both did it better. The first two episodes weren't even very gripping. The Miley Cyrus one was quite fun, but completely unoriginal.

Anyone else similarly disappointed?

Just started watching the first one of season 5. I'll let you know...

HouseOfMouse · 08/06/2019 00:38

I’ve just watched the Ashley O one so far and didn’t like it - it didn’t feel like Black Mirror at all to me.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 08/06/2019 00:48

Bit of a let down. The first one took way too long to get into it. The second one was bearable only because of Andrew Scott. I quite liked the Miley one.

Hi OP. Critics have agreed with you as have some posters on here. I enjoyed it personally but because I love Andrew Scott and Miley Cyrus and, more significantly, had not seen all other BM episodes yet with which to compare. The Guardian ranking is interesting and confirms your opinion.
Which is your favourite ever episode? (I now only have six to go).

Autocorrection · 08/06/2019 04:51

Is there only 3 episodes for series 5?
I was also a bit deflated after watching these. Usually the episodes are so gripping and make you really think.

This time... Not so much.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 08/06/2019 04:54

Only 3 yes because Bandersnatch took so much time and budget to make

GraceMarks · 08/06/2019 08:34

I enjoyed Bandersnatch for the novelty value more than because of the story - if it hadn't included the interactive bits, I doubt if it would have been very interesting.

My favourite episode is White Christmas, and then there are a few jostling for second place! Hang the DJ, Shut Up and Dance, Fifteen Million Merits, and Hated In the Nation are all up there.

Oh, and USS Callister too. I loved how tightly plotted it was and how it gradually revealed its hand, and it was properly funny as well.

I have to say that I pretty much rate every single episode very highly from series 1 - 4 except The Waldo Moment. Picking favourites is too hard! I think that's why series 5 has been disappointing for me.

HouseOfMouse · 08/06/2019 14:48

My favourite was The Entire History Of You, with plenty others in second place. I found Bandersnatch interesting rather than really engrossing. I was a bit surprised the Guardian rated Nosedive so high - I thought it was a nice idea but took far to long to get there.

FFSeverynameisused · 08/06/2019 14:59

This was a crap season. Baldersnatch was also shit.

billhubbard · 08/06/2019 15:08

I am with you op , I loved white Christmas the best . Very imaginative.
We recorded it and didn't watch it for months but was blown away when I watched it .
I also loved the one (sorry can't remember name ) when a woman lost her husband and subscribed to an agency when a computer with his memory was ringing her and then she had a robot of him living with her .
I also enjoyed the-black museum
I find them all a bit of a head fuck and they do make you think ...

taylorlynn · 09/06/2019 11:04

Watched episode one last night. Wasn't that impressed so far will watch the other two though!

thenightsky · 09/06/2019 19:27

Watched all three. Smithereens was the best. The Ashley one was like watching something aimed at young teens. Predictable too.

Letthenamesbegin · 09/06/2019 20:36

How could you not love the first one! It was like a love story,m

GraceMarks · 09/06/2019 21:39

Well, BM has done live stories before in a more imaginative and entertaining way. San Junipero and Hang the DJ were both much more touching and original than Striking Vipers, and they didn't take such a long time to get interesting! Possibly if I didn't have other episodes to compare it with, I would have enjoyed it more.

Just watched all of them and I'm massively disappointed in this series episodes. I thought smithereens was rather pointless (other than Andrew Scott). There didn't seem to be anything futuristic in the whole episode. Although I could have missed it as I wasn't avidly watching like I usually do. The first and last ones were ok, but nothing like episodes in previous series, which stick in your mind either through the great stories or how horrible they are (still disturbed by those machine dog things).

SouthWestmom · 12/06/2019 08:08

Ds and I have just started watching this. First one was Ashley o then the game one where they cycled in boxes then the memory one (grains in wars) which ds made me turn off as it was 'boring' then the VR one in the house? Also the one with text messages setting them up for blackmail.
We kind of binge watched it.

I really liked Ashley O maybe because it was easy to understand and got me into the idea? But I agree it was like a young teen thing.
