Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 US PACE! ##Spoilers for UK viewers##

AcrossthePond55 · 06/06/2019 00:47

We had a similar thread for season 2. This is specifically for those watching on Hulu in the US/elsewhere or UK streaming at the US pace so there be spoilers ahead for those watching at UK pace.

Please no spoilers if anyone has ‘advance knowledge’ of season 3 beyond the current episodes.

I’ve watched 2 of the 3 episodes dropped today. I’m pretty satisfied with things so far..I admit I got a bit emotional when it was clear that Emily and Nichole made it to Canada.

My only niggle right now is Mrs Lawrence. It’s pretty obvious she’s suffering from some type of MH condition. Yet everyone (pro Gilead)seems to buy Cdr Lawrence’s ‘she’s just tired’ or whatever excuses. Seems to me they’d be on the lookout for people outside the acceptable norm and anxious to ‘deal with them’.

I’ll be watching Ep 3 later tonight.

I listen to a podcast called Eyes on Gilead. It may even have been mentioned in one of these threads. I am sure it was there that they said they wanted to do ten series! We must also be aware of the possibility that perhaps June will die but we will still be in that world or that she will escape and we will see her try to bring down Gilead from Canada.

Either way I enjoy watching it but it's no longer as believable as it was in series one. It was terrifying. Now June has far too much leeway and I don't think that would be possible under those impossible conditions.

Aridane · 09/08/2019 21:14

I do agree, sap - she should have been on the wall a long time ago. Instead she just gets other people killed

Aridane · 09/08/2019 21:15

There’s an article I’ll link to about series 3 which is to do with the weakness of this series being the focus on June and her characterisation

Aridane · 09/08/2019 21:18

Morticia - gosh- was it that they could do 10 series or that they actually will.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/08/2019 23:22

I think 10 seasons would be too many unless they turned the focus onto other characters season by season and continued the series that way. Seven more seasons of 'just June' isn't going to work, but she could be the character that weaves the other characters' storylines together. I'd like the final season to be all the war trials and the reconstruction of Gilead back into the USA.

Well if they want to keep this thing running into the ground they have to try something different.

I mean widowers don't need Handmaid's. So June is about to be redeployed. And I for one am not going to watch another season of June going to some random Commanders house and having to navigate the ceremony and deal with strange Martha's and a new Wife again.

She also can't just kick her heels in the Red Centre for ages and ages.

My money is on June in S4 either becoming a Martha (unlikely as she's fertile) or a Wife.

June isn't considered married at all, as she was Lukes 2nd wife and thus its invalid. So theoretically Lawrence could get away with marrying her. It's probably not Canon, but let's face it June has crazy plot armour.

As a Wife she'd be in the nucleus of power and it would be a whole new chapter and it'd be pretty awesome.

She and Lawrence would have a marriage of convenience but it would be a practical solution for both of them.

SapatSea · 10/08/2019 11:25

Cmdr Lawrence , to cement his high position could lay a trap and give info to net all the Marthas, children and June. If the series is going to continue then I think June will need to be based near the border helping others or be in deep hiding as part of the underground. I suppose she will stay in Gilead as she will never leave Hannah, but surely after this planned stunt she'd be public enemy number one.

StormyLovesOdd · 10/08/2019 16:30

Oooh I think that would be an inspired plot twist if June married C Lawrence, it would really turn it all on it's head and she could help other handmaids and the children from an insiders position.

Aunt L would NOT be happy about it either

minou123 · 10/08/2019 16:42

Can I check something because I'm not sure if I've missed something.

I understand that as part of the deal, Serena would see Nicole for 1 hour if she conned Fred, so that the Anericans could arrest him.
However, from watching the last episode and her conversation with Fred in the prison, I got the impression that she's under the illusion that she could get custody of Nicole?
Did anyone else think that? And could she get Nicole back?

ElspethFlashman · 10/08/2019 16:51

I think the Americans are playing her.

ElspethFlashman · 10/08/2019 17:00

I suspect the other Wives would go apeshit too. She would have a massive job to gain even their attention let alone their trust. But that icy blonde one, who has Janines baby, she has always seemed an interesting character. The dynamics would be fascinating.

She'd be able to pay social calls and bump into a lot of Martha's and Handmaids too as she'd have transport.

Not to mention the effect it'd have on Luke.

It would be amazing.

Can't imagine it'll happen though as the show may insist she stay a Handmaid on principle.

ZazieTheCat · 10/08/2019 18:19

AcrossThePond I think the 52 children are all Handmaid’s Children from before. That’s why June needed to access the records in the basement.

Just seemed to me like June let Eleanor die so the plan wouldn’t be threatened. The same character flaw which made her selfish and single minded about getting to Hannah, is making her callous and single-minded about getting the children out. It’s motivated by revenge. She said something like “Gilead should know what it is to feel like this” I.e. miss a child desperately with no hope of getting them back. It’s not motivated by love or compassion solely.

Agree that Serena is being played re getting the baby back.

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 10/08/2019 18:51

I meant seasons not series sorry! If I remember correctly they see the story arc taking 10 seasons to tell. No more detail than that unfortunately.

I think they would have to expand the characters because as much as I love June/Elizabeth Moss I just couldn't take season after season of just that!

I think June has made huge tactical error by allowing Eleanor to die. Commander Lawrence has no need to leave. He was leaving to save his wife. Plus all the disappearing Commanders has catapulted him back to the top. Perhaps he will want to stay, maybe to change Gilead from within or maybe just to be a pompous, self righteous misogynistic arse!

I think he was viewing June with suspicion at the grave. He knows what she is capable of after killing Wilmslow. So does he suspect she had a hand in his wife's death? That she will do anything in order to fulfill her plan.

Next week is going to be interesting that's for sure. I just hope I am not as pissed off as I was at the end of season two when she didn't just bloody leave!!

bigmap · 11/08/2019 09:49

When June joined commander Lawrence at the graveside she crossed her hands to match how his hands were crossed. The cavers focused in on the hands and Lawrence looked pointedly at her hands. Was there something symbolic there? Was the placement of the hands some sort of coded apology?

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 11/08/2019 10:48

I thought that was a sign of power. Like she was showing him she was his equal.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/08/2019 20:11

See, I saw it as her trying to show Cdr L that "We are the same, we are together". That she and Cdr L are 'linked' by their hatred of Gilead (and the plan).

Evening all
Sorry to jump in, I was watching at UK pace but got impatient after episode 10 and I've watched 11 and 12 now Grin
Just wondering when episode 13 will become available? I need to work out timings and time difference but I'm scared to google in case of spoilers.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/08/2019 01:50

@AnotherEmma Episode 13 will released at midnight (New York time) tonight. So, in a little over 3 hours from now.

LadyCassandra · 14/08/2019 02:44

Does anyone know how I can watch in Australia before Thursday? I don’t think I can wait!

AnotherEmma · 14/08/2019 07:34

Across Thank you! In that case DH and I can watch it tonight, brilliant Grin

Snappedandfarted2019 · 14/08/2019 08:22

Does anyone have a link to watch the final episode on the uk

JustOneLastThing · 14/08/2019 09:48

Just watched it and fucking hell it was brilliant. Itching to know where they'll go with it next.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/08/2019 13:23

It really was, Just! Killing me that we'll have to wait a year to find out. There are so many ways they can go with the ending as it was.

For those of you looking for a link, I don't have one. Just want to remind you that this thread will start to contain major spoilers very soon!

Did anyone else besides me think that June was planning to get on the plane after all? I know she said she wasn't because of Hannah, but after the Martha took off into the woods I thought that she may have changed her mind.

And the scene at the hangar with Luke watching the children deplane just broke my heart.

OP posts:
BG2015 · 14/08/2019 14:03

I've just watched it. I was sobbing at the end. I couldn't stop.

I thought all the adults there were going to get on the plane but decided not to and abandoned that idea to support June.

But like at the end of season 2, if June isn't in Gilead we don't have a Handmaid to tell her tale. I just don't know how she will escape the wall now. And the twist with Serena - brilliant. But what a bastard Fred was, when he knows that all Serena wanted was to be a mother - he's scuppered all chances of that now. (Not that she deserves to be a mum)
