Does anyone watch Van Der Valk on TAlking pictures channel? I'm so confused by it!

I only remember from my childhood the gorgeous theme tune, but theyre repeating it now on the brilliant Talking Pictures channel.

Anyway. Series 1 he had a dark haired wife and 2 boys, plus a gorgeous assistant (Michael Lattimer).

series 2 the boys and Michael Latimer have disappeared and his wife has regenerated (I know Barry Foster looks a bit like Jon Pertwee but this aint no Doctor WHO!) into a fair haired woman and they have no kids.
now next series his wife has regenerated yet again -same character- into a blonde woman and now they have a grown up daughter! WTF?

And its set in Amsterdam, it's good they haven't don an 'allo allo' with accents but it's still confusing!

Anyone explain that?

We're just giving this a bump for you, OP. Flowers

I'm clearly not paying enough attention, I saw the episode with the 2 boys, but I haven't seen the daughter yet, or even noticed his wife changing Blush
Although I'm not quite up to date.

We bought it on DVD and found it hilarious that he hadn't noticed that he had three different wives and a change of children. Very patchy and hadn't stood the test of time too well. Lots of boring bits when they drive round Amsterdam.
We recently bought I, Claudius and are really enjoying that. Some brilliant actors (especially Derek Jacobi, John Hurt and Sian Phillips) and the costumes are great. It is all set in the studio, so more like watching a stage play.

I have tape this as never saw it as a child .
I missed taping callan before this and that was good and stood the test of time .
So i thought i would tape this lot but I have only watch a few episodes and found it slow.

I’ve only watched it twice, 30 years apart, and it was the same episode. How does that work? I’ve started a thread about it.

RhubarbIsEvil · 26/05/2019 22:51

Was Barrymore Foster married to a hospital doctor it was he just a lecherous groper?

QuiQuaiQuod · 27/05/2019 18:57

Thanks Lily Smile.

Rhubarb- the 2nd incarnation wife I think is supposed to be a doctor.where is your thread about it?

Myyear- all I saw in Callan was Callan beating everyone up!

Also, it never quite seems to finish, its always like the last page is missing every story.
I like seeing Amsterdam though.

QuiQuaiQuod · 27/05/2019 19:05

Theme tune one of the best ever. 1st thing I learnt to play on the recorder.

Have you seen the 1990s series where his leather jacket and sneaker wearing son is on the force? (just so you know he is on the vice/drug's squad)

RhubarbIsEvil · 27/05/2019 19:37

Why have I not seen this man before?

QuiQuaiQuod · 29/05/2019 16:41

Nice eh? Smile. THAT'S why I started watching VDV.

If you've got Forces TV (sky 181) Michael Latimer's on a n episode of Special Branch Sunday 9pm. This is when I fell in crush with him, it was on a few months ago and I just thought WOW!

Apparantly VDV has a son now as well! more confusing than ever. And in a couple of recent episodes was he cheating on his wife? Not surprising when she keeps changing. LOL!

Doesn't help that I have to watch it on mute as my disabled DC's breathing get very shallow at night when she's in bed so I have to watch tv with mute, and VDV doesn't provide subtitles so I'm guessing the storylines and what theyre trying to say, I'm not very good at lip reading.

It's the amount of drinking that makes us laugh. Morning Guv -do you want a beer?
Wife brings him a packed lunch with a bottle of something Grin

beelover · 29/05/2019 21:52

I am old enough to have watched this first time round and used to love it but now find it really slow. Same for Callan which used to be DH's favourite programme as a young teen.
The theme tune for Van der Valk is called Eye Level, the orchestra appeared on Top of the Pops Smile

QuiQuaiQuod · 31/05/2019 17:46

Oh the drinking! and smoking! breakfast, mid morning, lunch, afternoon, dinner, before bed....... I'm surprised theyre not all sozzled all the time!
