Soap stars quitting

It's in the news today that Kym Marsh is quitting Corrie. I wish her all the best but I don't understand why these stars risk doing this? To have a well paid job in a popular soap with regular storylines is really lucky I think, I can't think of many that have left and gone on to actually do much bigger things, am I wrong?

Perhaps she wants to do theatre?

Samcro · 25/02/2019 11:38

i imagine they have other things they want to do.

bobstersmum · 25/02/2019 11:38

I will add that I understand Kym will likely return to Corrie in the future but I'd be too nervous in case they wouldn't have me back! Haha.

She might want a role without all that swishy hair.

bobstersmum · 25/02/2019 11:49

Yes I think she did some West End things before landing the role as Michelle. Suppose its not really quitting for her it's more likely an agreed time away to do something else for a while, good for her. But some have quit and never been seen again.

I suppose its the same as many other jobs though, you are there for years and years, not much scope to stretch yourself and try anything new, the time comes when you feel you need to move on even if it is risky.

ajandjjmum · 25/02/2019 12:00

I'm just pissed off that it was on the news - talk about a spoiler!!!

TheSpottedZebra · 25/02/2019 12:11

Well the chap who played Peter beale in EE was just at the Oscars last night, having been in the Queen film, so there's always hope.

AutumnCrow · 25/02/2019 12:31

Kim Marsh can sing and dance a bit, so maybe she misses that side of things? Michelle is a very dull character in Corrie.

Petalflowers · 25/02/2019 21:39

She was part of Hear’Say, the original winners of Popstars (which preceded The X Factor), so has a lot more strings to her bow.

southeastdweller · 25/02/2019 22:11

I agree. I don't know what she could do next - possibly write another book? For every Sarah Lancashire or Suranne Brown there's fifty-odd others who've struggled to make a decent career after leaving soaps.

I get she might be bored, though.

SapatSea · 26/02/2019 10:29

Kym Marsh is just taking a bit of a sabbatical, she'll be back, she's not being killed off and has said she arranged to have some time to do other things and is looking forward to returning to the street.

I agree that leaving is a big risk. It's best if they will "leave the door open" for a return.

AutumnCrow · 26/02/2019 13:25

The writers might not even need to write her out. They could just not have her in it for a while. Her character Michelle's so tedious that no-one would notice.

Or Michelle could go travelling with one or both of her tedious sons/not sons. Find herself up the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Or whatever.

SapatSea · 26/02/2019 14:57

I agree AutumnCrow I don't know why they bother writing "exit" storylines whenever any of the characters have time off for a play, maternity etc since they are often MIA for months at a time. When was the last time Ali was seen (being lairy with Bethany whilst we was waiting tables at t'bistro?) What about supposed "fan favourite", Maria? Just not missed or Aliyah . Is she still even employed on Corrie?

Shelbybear · 26/02/2019 15:11

My thoughts originally too but then they work very long days usually at 5/6 days a week.

She will get plenty of other opportunities. I'm sure she will return to Corrie too. Maybe wants to spend time with her family and her new grandchild due to arrive in a few months I think.
