The BAFTA awards

Watching the awards and finding it difficult to believe the awards were all based on public preferences. Last week went to see The Favourite and Bohemium Rhapsody. I also read reviews of both by ordinary cinema goers. We absolutely loved BR but although acknowledging that the acting was good and the settings great, The Favourite was not that enjoyable and I wouldn’t recommend it to friends. The reviews I read consolidated our opinion. Yet, the awards, with the exception of best actor, had little to support these more popular opinions. I did agree with Rama, the Netflix production, getting recognition as best film so perhaps my moans are based on us not enjoying The Favourite. I expect there will be lots of you disagreeing with me but am interested in your views.

They are voted by members of BAFTA not the general public like the Oscars.

Ha, ha! There is the solution! Best ignore the awards and look for reviews by ordinary filmgoers!

It should be Roma, not Rama.

Also is it a case of supporting the film industry rather than unbiased opinions.

It's all so subjective though, as an ordinary film goer. I thought BR and The Favourite were both brilliant films and thoroughly enjoyed them both. I recommended BR to everyone and The Favourite to my friends who I know like that type of thing.

I watched Roma yesterday and am wondering why it got Best Film. It's good, but I don't put it above the other two. I don't know what BAFTA's judging criteria is and I haven't seen all the films up for the main awards so unless I could compare them all, my 'vote' doesn't really count for much.

Waltzingparrot. I am pleased you enjoyed The Favourite. Perhaps, in retrospect, I was not expecting the storyline and in fact had anticipated a comedy!! I found it very weird but well acted.
