Abducted in plain sight - Netflix - WTF?

I've just watched this and I'm actually speechless. The amount of times I had to pick my chin up off the floor! Mum shags daughters abuser, and Dad gives him "relief". And allowing him such access to their daughter even after he abducted her the first time! Then the brainwashing, the aliens?

I'm really struggling to take this at face value - no parents could possibly be that naive, surely? There's lots of different stuff at play - their religion, their manipulation, the social climate in the 1970s.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this child was failed by her parents. But were they duped, naive and manipulated, or was there more going on? Were they complicit?

I'd love to know what others think. This has been one of the most thought provoking docs I've watched since Dear Zachary.

Couldn't agree more, both at the so called naïveté & that the parents let Jan down.

I felt so sad watching it that she wasn't protected

Aloneforeverandever · 20/01/2019 17:04

Watching this now and don't know what to make of it. I mean you wouldn't just go out in the car and wank someone off. It's too bizarre for words.

BartonHollow · 22/01/2019 18:00

Watching now and it's seriously horrifying

ZAHAOHH · 22/01/2019 19:33

Truly truly horrific.... you just could not imagine parents to be so naive and gullible. I appreciate it was the 70s and a time when you left your back door open and let neighbours flow in and out but seriously???? The more I watched , I just thought this is so bizarre and crazy that I honest do not think you could make this up?! Literally had my stomach turning throughout the whole documentary.

BartonHollow · 22/01/2019 20:22

Her parents response to it is the most shocking thing and in the way they expressed themselves for example they didn't contact the FBI for 5 days, and when she came back and was badly behaved just blamed her behaviour on her and still speak of it years later in that way as if it wasn't because of the abuse

twattymctwatterson · 25/01/2019 18:08

Jesus I'm just watching this now. They practically pimped her out

PegLegAntoine · 26/01/2019 04:34

This is another thing I want to watch (also going to watch the ted bundy documentary)

Transpeaked · 26/01/2019 04:43

I got as far as the muddle of the first abduction and couldn’t watch any more - I wanted to throttle the parents.

SamBaileys · 26/01/2019 18:20

So I've watched this today.
From the moment the dad said he masturbated him in the car I watched it literally with my mouth gaping open. Surely at that point you realise theres a rabbit off here...jesus bloody Christ. Then it was one unbelievable thing after another.

thecatsleftpaw · 26/01/2019 18:29

I just couldn't believe what I was watching.

The parents let him stay him her room as therapy for his alleged past abuse a child. I mean, what the actual fuck?

Checkthemeaning · 26/01/2019 18:32

Another shocked viewer here!! When her mother just put her on a plane to go and see him.....what the hell?! And the mother still spoke of her sex sessions with him with fondness

CrazyDuchess · 26/01/2019 18:34

Legit watched this with my jaw on the floor - her parents failed her so so badly!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 26/01/2019 18:38

I think the mother still loves him. The moment when she asked him "if you love me, why did you marry Jan?" - The most fucked up sentence ever.

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 26/01/2019 18:39

I know!

Gullible?
Naive?
Plain stupid?

I was horrified and shocked watching it. To think they think their story should be shared? Of course all predators should be treated with contempt and not be kept a secret but do they not realise that they will be seen so negatively?

The whole "my therapist said to get over my aunt abusing me that I must spend the night in bed with your child"? WTAF?!?

LittleMe03 · 26/01/2019 18:46

I saw this today when on Netflix but haven't watched. I'm not sure I want to now Shock

SamBaileys · 26/01/2019 18:56

No @LittleMe03 you should watch it, just to see for yourself how actually unbelievable it is. Never seen anything like it.

SquishyFishy · 26/01/2019 19:27

WTF is the best way to describe this. I think the most shocking part is that the parents are describing what happened as if their choices are completely rational and normal!

CatsonCatnip · 26/01/2019 22:12

The bit at the end when the Dad says “...of all the things we did wrong, we did a lot of things right...” or something along those lines, I literally shouted at the screen “are you F’ING KIDDING ME!????”

BartonHollow · 26/01/2019 22:29

How she's forgiven them I don't know

I think they've gaslighted her

Maybe hearing the story packaged in this way will help her realise.

There was a point as well were I felt one of the sisters was blaming JAN and not "B" or her parents for the fact that what was going on with Jan seriously impacted her own childhood

PolaDeVeboise · 27/01/2019 10:33

Watched this last night. Astounding, simply astounding. And,yes, I think the Mother was still in love with him. I also think she used Jan to keep him in her life. Sickening.

LittleMe03 · 27/01/2019 20:47

Just watched. Wow. Just wow

Lorddenning1 · 03/02/2019 11:37

This cannot be real, Iv never watched something as fucked up

Skade · 03/02/2019 11:39

I watched this with my jaw on the floor. Of all the fucked up things in this documentary, it says something that the fact he kidnapped her TWICE is the least weird thing about the whole story!

InfiniteSheldon · 03/02/2019 11:46

Omg! I lived through the seventies and it was a different time. Gay men for married their wives got frustrated and that pair were ripe for the pucking. It's a fascinating insight into the behaviour of a master manipulator but my God even for t he seventies that pair were sh ocking. The worse for me was signing the affidavits to conceal their behaviou. Oh and letting him drug, share a bed with and rape their twelve year old daughter!!! I'm glad they made it and glad they have come together as a family. I think this should be compulsory viewing for parents and preteens.

rafffy · 03/02/2019 11:48

ive only watched half of it so far but you cant make this shit up. it is INSANE!
