Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun

Love love love this programme so much! Grin. Such a guilty pleasure on a Thursday evening.

The expats (heavy percentage on the ladies it seems) are all so happy, tanned and loving life living in caravans with all the mid cons, going on mystery tours, baking on the beach and mooching the markets.

Then there are the wonderful souls who tirelessly care for homeless animals.

And someone is always opening a bar or restaurant that you know someone else will be opening before too long.

When I'm older I want to live on the Costa del Sol, run a chip shop, give all my love to street cats and live on sunshine, chips and €2 pints of beer. Happy days 😁

Who's joining me?

Oh its bloody brilliant isn't it? I'm a terrible snob to be honest and just feel quite ill at the thought of being there, but on the other hand...

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 18/01/2019 10:18

I started off being very snobby too but you can't help but get sucked in and admire their zest for life! It's quite infectious. They haven't got much money but they've found a way of living within their means in a place they love with like minded people.

The comedy value is brilliant. Better than the actual 'Benidorm' sit com. Lady on the mystery tour 'I hope we're going somewhere Spanish' Grin

It is my guilty pleasure too! In a few years I may be old enough to join the retirees and as long as there is a book club and knit & natter I will be content.

I haven't started this series yet but read it was set somewhere else in Spain so interested to see how it compares. I liked the fitness instructor and his group in the last series but happy days got on my nerves a bit

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 18/01/2019 12:07

Yes it's further south this time (I think they said the sport's bar is in Fuengirola) so none of the old 'cast' and no Happy Days. Although he never really seemed that happy to me - too stressy!

This is my guilty pleasure too. I get the kids early to bed on Thursdays so I can watch it!

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 18/01/2019 19:58

There was another show called "A new life in the sun' which was great too. It had more emphasis on brits starting up businesses.

Used to live in Southern Spain and it's a pretty accurate reflection of life there. There's lots of people wanting to escape the UK for various reason, not just retirees, which makes for lots of interest. We know people who live on campsites like the one on the show and, whilst it wouldn't suit me, they are as happy as Larry. The animal rescue is huge too, anywhere Brits have settled there will be a dog and/or cat rescue charity.

I love the programme and the life. Why did I ever leaveGrin

Costacoffeeplease · 19/01/2019 10:41

I love it too, and A New Life in the Sun - I wish they’d do another series of No Going Back too, and an update on all the original participants

We moved to the Algarve almost 16 years ago, so we are living a similar life (although not retirement age, and not on a campsite Smile)

KirstieandPhil · 19/01/2019 10:44

Oooh I'm glad there's a thread on this, it's my guilty pleasure. I'm definitely retiring to a caravan park in the sun. I miss Haapy Days though Grin

forgivenminds · 19/01/2019 11:25

Another series of a new life in the sun was been filmed over the summer so hopefully it is coming back soon

Justtheoneplease · 19/01/2019 11:33

Oooh I love programmes like this. What day/side/time is it on. Love A place in the sun, always fantasizing about moving abroad. Any others I'm missing?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 19/01/2019 11:52

justtheoneplease Bargain Loving Brits is on Thursdays 8pm Ch5.

Glad to hear A New Life in the Sun is coming back forgive. I'm sure its usually on at this time of year so hopefully soon Smile

costa No Going Back was excellent. I'd also love an update. The family that I remember the most, who moved to Tuscany, must have grown up children now. I'd love to know if theyre still there and how they're doing.

We also enjoy Escape to the Chateau and the spin off series where we saw other people's French home makeovers.

Ch5 did a show with people relocating to Australia called 'A new life in oz' which was good.

Yes I’d like to see the family in Tuscany - I doubt he’s doing many jimmy saville impersonations now!

I also remember the family with the trout farm, the couple with house in france who also bought a ski chalet, and the family who bought a huge villa in the south of france which turned out not to have any drainage or cess pit. I’d love to know how all of them turned out

EachandEveryone · 19/01/2019 13:08

I wonder how much your pension would have to be and, can you take the cats over there with you.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 24/01/2019 20:47

Who's watching?

Poor blackdog Sad. I Hope they can help him.
