currently on season 4 of Suits, I really enjoy legal dramas and I am enjoying it mostly for the client stories. But I have to have a little rant about the abysmal characters, the vast majority of whom I find deeply unlikable. They all let their personal squabbles get in the way of their work, they’re meant to be the “hottest” lawyers in NYC yet argue about their girlfriends in front of clients and refuse to talk to one another even when its work related if they’ve fallen out. Surely law firms aren’t remotely like this?!
Mike - I know we’re meant to see him as a baby faced wonder boy, but I find him incredibly smug and arrogant, if I spoke to my superiors the way he speaks to his I’d be flattened. The way he treated Katrina when she first came to the firm too was awful, so sexist and superior because he’s chums with Harvey, then he had a paddy when she bit back. Considering he’s a total fraud he ought to watch his tongue a bit better!
Rachel - I find her far too one dimensional to care about in any way shape or form. I also judge her for dating Mike. She should have gone back to the far sexier and successful non-fraud Logan. No wonder poor Meghan waltzed off the show into the arms of Harry. Probably bored to death by her dull stories and lines
Jessica - what a miserable bitch! Her nepotism towards Harvey, coupled with her disdain for everyone else, is uncomfortable to watch. And she’s supposedly this hot shot lawyer, yet we never see this displayed, all we see is her sitting at her desk making lemon faces all day and telling Harvey to make all the decisions.
Harvey - bad tempered, arrogant, rude, misogynistic arsehole. Thinks he can scream at whoever he wants because he’s “Harvey Spectre” and allegedly super duper successful and god-like. He reckons he has a deep respect for the law but breaks it from the first episode by hiring Mike.
The only two I remotely like are Donna and Louis. With Donna it’s mainly because she’s funny, but I feel sorry for her because she’s misses out on life as she’s too tied and committed to Harvey, who barely knows she exists unless he needs her to work til 4am or needs someone to scream at.
And I adore Louis, the only character with anything about him. He’s so sweet and smart, his intellect is far superior to that of Harvey and he’s a fantastic lawyer, but gets overshadowed because Jessica is too busy knocking one out over Harvey. If he ever does anything “vindictive” it’s only in retaliation to someone who’s treated him like shit yet again, and the person on the other end usually deserves it. I think he carries the show!
SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT COMING UP
I’m on the episode where he has been fired and finds out Mike is a fraud, and tells Jessica he wants to be named partner. The episode has ended there before she answers, but I hope she says no and Louis goes to the police, gets her, Harvey and Mike arrested, is lauded as the hero who got the criminals out and is voted managing partner with Katrina at his side. I know Mike is still in it for a bit though so perhaps unlikely!
Also, the dialogue is infuriating. They all finish each other’s sentences and interrupt each other like there’s no tomorrow. They also just make random turns of phrase up that don’t make sense and shout them at each other to describe the current predicament they’re in. “You can’t push the stallion out before it’s had a chance to graze on the hay!”. What? Speak normally! “What they’re taking with one hand, they’re biting off with the other”. STFU Harvey you twat. Also, I read somewhere that in the US only a few swear words are acceptable on shows that air after 9pm but before 11pm (or thereabouts) and “shit” is one of them. I think the Suits writers are capitalising on this far too much as it’s very overused word. “This don’t mean shit Harvey if you don’t get your shit together and bring me some fresh shit”. Or “Louis I’m gonna fire the shit out of you”. Nice image.
It does have good qualities too - I like the diversity, the setting, the more fun secondary characters, but Is it just me who gets frustrated at the main characters and the way they speak?
