Yes, he thought all the Time Lords had been destroyed in the (unscreened) Time War with the Daleks. Their planet was wiped out.

On the other hand, the Master was a wandering renegade - and so was the Rani played by Kate O'Mara - so quite what led the Doctor to presume they were dead too is a mystery.

This week's Radio Times has a good little potted history of the Master. Or you could try this !

bigmouthstrikesagain · 22/06/2007 22:54

The Master I remember (probably not accurately)- had a fantastic little minge beard and he wore black (like Black Adder II or Alan Rickman as Sheriff of Nottingham!) I think I had a crush on him - why do women always go for the bad boys??!!

Think John Simm could be good but possibly a bit boyish?

mrsjohnsimm · 22/06/2007 22:58

BOYISH?????

bigmouthstrikesagain · 22/06/2007 23:10

Sorry Mrs Simm - boyish is lovely - but is he evil enough?

lemonaid · 22/06/2007 23:21

Did you see that trailer? I think he's evil enough [thinks: mmmmm... evil....]

bigmouthstrikesagain · 22/06/2007 23:27

I will reserve judgement he is a very good actor - maybe I like my villians a bit panto

bea · 23/06/2007 10:40

aahh! thank you unquietdad for the wikipedia link... the source of all knowledge!..

the radio times thing was the thing that was confusing me as it detailed the past eps where the master appeared.... so the doctor must have known he was the last....

anyway... will have to ask a dr who geeky friend more questions when i see him... he and a friend actually used to build life size replica darleks and actually sold one to russel t davies when he was just beginning to write in manchestr... my dr who claim to fame...

do you know what i want to know? i want to know what happened to Susan, his granddaughter

dunno why but i am very curious.

has someone explained what happened? there is somethign that we found out about an episode or two ago, fgs (hmm) that means a time lord can disguise themselves as a human by essentially hiding the time lordiness in a watch

(oooh theres clever-a watch-time lord, geddit? , not very impressed BUT anyway)

so in theory there could be an entire race of time lords, similarly hidden in watches. The doctor probably ought to start posting on newsgroups or something to find out if anyone ELSE has such a watch. Or he could just go on richard and judy or something.

am feeling a bit let down at the not-cleverness of all this.

and spot on re master being the moriarty-holmes. with about as much subtle character interplay also.

UnquietDad · 23/06/2007 11:50

fillyjonk:
She stayed on 22nd-century Earth with a resistance fighter called David, at the start of the second original series in 1964.

(MAYBE she chameleon-arced herself first so that she was human! After all, regeneration would have come as a bit of a shock to him!)

beansprout · 23/06/2007 12:03

lol at "time lordiness in a watch" - fab explanation!

lemonaid · 23/06/2007 19:26

He's been pretty evil so far...

MrsWho · 23/06/2007 22:05

Its that he has to be a bit mad though too

Katymac · 23/06/2007 23:04

I thought "Susan" was adopted - I'm sure I read that somewhere

UnquietDad · 23/06/2007 23:09

It was never explicitly stated on screen where Susan came from, just that she was his "granddaughter". Could have been adopted, could have been a term of affection, could have been a genuine relative...

Who knows what the Time Lord word translated by the TARDIS for us as "granddaughter" actually means?!

lemonaid · 23/06/2007 23:14

There are a couple of different backstories in the Whoniverse, I think.

SaintGeorge · 23/06/2007 23:15

Quite a few references have been made throught Dr Who episodes that could refer to Susan.

Interesting wikipedia article

lemonaid · 23/06/2007 23:16

It means "scriptwriters belatedly concerned at implications of 15yo hanging around with old bloke", that's what it means...

fillyjonk · 24/06/2007 11:11

i know i know re susan

i just think some reference to her in the new, watchable dr who might be nice

i think the reference to her being adopted is in the books, isn't it? thusly Not Canon

he is NOT ok, fio

right now he has been aged 100 years (I am puzzled as to why this would MATTER to a time lord but still)

we are all on tenterhooks

AttilaTheMum · 24/06/2007 12:55

The whole ageing thing is interesting, because the doctor has said at various points that he is hundreds of years old, yet the William Hartnell body was apparently his first, and appeared in Earth eyes to be maybe 75 years old. This would seem to indicate that the ageing process is much slower than for a human - maybe 10 times slower, so 100 years of ageing would only put on the appearance of about +10 years.
But it's possible that the only reason for the slowness of the ageing is the influence of the Time Lord technology in the TARDIS, and in its current 'cannibalised' state, presumably it isn't working - so the 100 years of ageing have had the same effect as they would on a human.

The Hartnell/Troughton regeneration is the only one so far that was a normal one - the others have all been caused by trauma of some kind or imposed upon him. Most Time Lords living cosily in the Panopticon would only regenerate due to extreme old age.
