Sky Landscape Painter of the Year 2018 - possible spoilers

Is anyone one else watching this?

I've watched over the past couple of years along with more recently the Portrait Artist program.

For those who don't watch, they get 8 painters who have been selected on the basis of a submitted painting, to paint a landscape.

Over the past couple of years there's been a few odd pictures but mainly the people going through to the semis and finals are able to actually paint some sort of version of the landscape in front of them...which I thought was vaguely the point of the show.

This year however each winner of the heats have been really obscure. Another week they were in these beautiful water gardens with lakes, trees, a little bridge (you get the idea) but the girl who won paint a bright orange version of part of a marble statue.

This week they were in Scotland with an amazing castle, landscaped gardens, sky, sea etc etc and the winner painted some trees in a palette of only black & greys.

I get they want to be edgey and different, but surely the whole point of taking the artists somewhere is to get them to paint that vista, and not something totally out of their imagination. They could just put them in a room and tell them to get on with it. It's almost as if you paint what you see, that's not good enough!

I'm so disappointed as I've been waiting ages for this to come on. I don't even mind that they've got rid of Frank Skinner, who was actually ok on this show.

We watch and live not far from the castle! I've been amazed at the amount of professionals taking part. I think it might be more...engaging if it were all amateurs.

I think you might be right Blooms!

They usually pick the picture I think is the worst. I love it when it turns out the 'abstract' artist who they wax lyrical about their originality does something that looks exactly like their submission because the truth is they can't paint.

And some of the professional artists I wonder who buys this??!!

AviatorShades · 23/11/2018 10:40

I've missed this! Loved it in previous years. Can you point me to the channel and times, please? I've got a free day today so fingers crossed I can see previous on catch up.Thanks.

Our art Mistress at school was of the 'paint what's in your mind not what you see' school of art.

Not the best suggestion to a group of 15 yr old hormonal girls Grin

I too have been really disappointed this series. I have not agreed with the vast majority of the decisions. I am an aspiring artist and the confidence of these professional contestants and their ability to talk bollocks amazes me!

On the flip side, I think Stephen Mangan is doing a good job although I too liked Frank Skinner in this.

Dammit! I've just checked and it's only available on Sky this yearAngry
I ain't got Sky. Damn and Blast.

So the Beeb lost the golf coverage concession and now this too.

T'aint fair! Grin.
